Help! Crete to Santorini!
I am trying to plan a honeymoon, and am having major difficulty finding a good way to get between Crete and either Santorini and Mykonos (I plan on going to all 3 in addition to Corfu last).
I can get a flight on Aegean air (connect through Athens), but can't find any catamaran routes. Are there any in early Oct?? Since I would like to go to Corfu, Crete, Santorini, and Mykonos, whats the suggested order that I travel?? I was thinking Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu, then Athens in that order. Is there a better, cheaper, or more efficient way? I was thinking air between athens and crete and mykonos-athens-corfu. Problem is I can't find any fast ferries between Crete-Santorini-Mykonos! |
Unless you're really tight on time, I would ferry to Mykonos, then on to Santorini, then to Crete, and fly back to Athens from either Chania or Heraklion.
Wonderful place for a honeymoon; have fun! |
Here's a link to the Hellenic Seaways website showing the schedule for their catamaran between Heraklion and Mykonos, stopping along the way at Santorini, Ios, Naxos and Paros. From September 19 to October 2 this cat runs on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You'll have to wait until later in the year to see if there's any change for after October 2.
http://www.greekislands.gr/hfd/ On Tuesdays and Fridays in October you can also catch the Minoan Lines Car Ferry departing Heraklio at 20:00, arriving at Santorini around 23:45. www.gtp.gr |
Does anyone know if the Flying Cat ferries are the only fast ferries/catamarans that run from Crete to Santorini to Mykonos in october?
|
Although the schedules do change without notice sometimes, www.gtp.gr will give you the most accurate published timetable for every ferry going to any particular destination. As far as I've ever known the Hellenic cat is the only fast boat to and from Crete/Santorini/Mykonos. Blue Star Ferries also has a fast cat but it doesn't travel that route.

There is a 'Lane line' ferry that goes from Ag.Nikolaos (Crete) and Sitia (Crete) to Santorini. This is around 3/week all year round as it is not a tourist route, please check it calls in at Santorini though with the ferry agents in the ports. The fast ferries tend to dissappear later in the year, so as always check with ferry agents in the ports.
The order you suggest is sensible and about as efficient as is possible for those islands. |
Bringing your "other" (newer) question back up "to the top" since it has scarcely been answered, and might attract more attention as an add-on to this original question of yours.
Perhaps you have been unsure how to find this earlier post... ...click on your own name. ;) |
www.cretetravel.com has a summary of all services from Crete to Santorini, including the fast ferry PANAGIA THALASSINI which started running this summer. The fast craft will stop running in (or before) October and, even if they're scheduled to run then, can easily be cancelled by bad weather. A fixed itinerary is not a good idea if you're island-hopping in October.
