Help clarify the carryon policy for EU to USA flights

Hello from Brussels, all!

Mr. Canterbury and I will wind up our trip on Tuesday morning leaving from Frankfurt.

I thought that on 4/17/2007 the rules were going to change regarding carryon limit from ANY EU to USA - meaning only one bag allowed including personal item. Mr. Canterbury saw an article that said this has been postponed until November.

I checked AA's website and they still have the two bags per person limit posted.

Anyone have any differing information?

Many thanks,

c.

I just returned from Spain last week and I think two carryons are still the policy everywhere. I actually had three (I don't always include my camera case) and I didn't have any problems. None of my carryons were very large. People run into problems when they have a large or heavy carryon piece of luggage.

Hi C,

Have you called AA?

The EU has decided that the UK proposal is deferred until November.

AA's world-wide web sites give you all the info you need.

Note that the UK and Switzerland are not part of the EU, and their rules are only 1 carry on period.

As far as Fodors knows (both posters and the editors since Doug Stallings has also chimed in on the discussions) is the reg for 1 item through security have been delayed until Nov. They do apply now to any flight leaving the UK - but not on the continebt just yet.

BTW - it has nothing to do w/ how many bags you can take on the plane. Only for how many can be carried through screening/security. When you take out the 1 qt ziplok bag of liquids, you can place your handbag/laptop/camera case/whatever into the carry on for screening.

Then after you are airside simply put he liquids back in and take the handbag out.

So even post-implementation, you can still have two carry-ons if you plan right . . . .

This is interesting info. Thanks for posting this. We will be flying NW this July to Italy so I will definitely need this clarified for our trip, too. Up until now, I was under the impression that one carry-on was allowed and if you carried a purse or handbag it had to fit in the carry-on. Rules have changed?
