Have never rented a car before-am renting one in Burgundy-what kind of insurance coverage should one get?

What kind of coverage do you get when you rent a car in your own country? Assuming you are staying in Frrance, you can get the same thing in France. That is, if you want the car rental company to sell you (fairly expensive) insurance, by the day, that indemnifies you from even one penny of liability, no matter what happens to the car or anyone/anything you might hit - - then they will gladly will sell it to you.<BR><BR>If you want to rely on the insurance provided by a credit card you carry, you could do that too. Be aware that that this could result on a big liability being placed against your credit card - - and you get reimbursed (with proper police documents, etc) later - - this is true even in your own country, no doubt.<BR><BR>You can even drive at your own risk, if you so choose. I have done that plenty times before, in the US and abroad. And I have occasionally paid for some damages.<BR><BR>I figured I have saved a few thousand dollars in the process, over the course of hundreds of rentals.<BR><BR>But I have occasionally purchased the coverage. In that case, unless and until you foresee lots of traveling with car rentals, perhaps you will prefer to simply ask the car rental company to include the &quot;complete&quot; insurance coverage.<BR><BR>It's outrageously expensive when you think of what costs &quot;by the year&quot; - - i.e., $30 a day is more than $10,000 a year.<BR><BR>But $30 a day is nothing compared to potentially being at risk for the full value of the car - - not to mention potential liability if you injure someone or something else.<BR>

Liability insurance is included in rentals in France. Collision damage can be purchased as Rex has outlined OR if your credit card company covers it (check specifically with them) you can decline it. When we rented in France in October they did put a $700 charge/hold on our credit card.<BR>The various options and prices are spelled out on the rental site (we use AutoEurope) so you can decide which option you want. Be sure to rent/reserve before you arrive in France.
