Help between Naples and Rome

Please help me to find a little place we can stop for 2 nights preferable along the train line from Naples To Rome. We are travelling in May 2008 and have 2 free nights after our "Volcano Discovery tour"

http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/volc...peii_tour.html

based from Naples and before our booked Globus bus tour of Rome, Florence and Venice.
I found Ostia Antica but have now realised we must go into Rome first to change train stations to get there. Is this a problem? Or can you help me choose another destination?

Steve_James Oct 24th, 2007 05:04 AM

Hi Sweet - The main place to stop on the train route is the Formia/ Gaeta area.

Sperlonga would also be a nice choice - but is not accessible by train.

If you want to be a liitle more adventurous, consider the offshore island of Ponza - accessible from Formia or Naples.

'I found Ostia Antica but have now realised we must go into Rome first to change train stations to get there. Is this a problem?'

No. See your other thread.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Where does your Globus tour start, Rome or Naples?

It is pretty easy to take the train to Rome, switch to the Metro b and then switch to the Ostia Lido train. It takes about 45 minutes from Termini to the Ostia station.

Do a search on Ostia and you'll find some recent posts on this.

Since you'll already be in Naples, why not stay there? Naples to Rome is only 1.5 - 2.5 hours by train, so it should be an easy trip to Rome for your Globus tour. Staying two extra nights in Naples will allow you to see Sorrento, Capri, Paestum, Ischia, Caserta, etc., all with good transportation connections.

Other than the Formia/Gaeta area, and perhaps Latina (the city of Latina is several km from the Latina train station IIRC), there isn't a whole lot in between Naples and Rome. There is Anzio, Parco Circeo, and maybe Monte Cassino. I don't think that any of those three places are on a train line. (OK, Monte Cassino may be on the new Rome-Naples line, but it's the ES*AV 300-kph line....does it have stations?)

I definitely agree with Tdyls. Stay in Naples. There is so much more to see. Easy excursions to Sorrento or the islands. Maybe stay on Capri or better yet, at a thermal spa resort on Ischia. That would be a very relaxing ending to a volcano tour. Then take the train to Rome. You picked 2 great tours by the way. Have a wonderful time!
Yours truly, Volcano Fan

Hi guys,
thanks. Daveesl, Our Globus tour leaves from Rome. This does include 3 nights already in Rome.
And we a very much looking forward to the volcano tour, travmimi, have you done this one?
We were looking at Ostia Antica because of the ruins there also, and we found the accomodation in the "burg" to be very interesting, and maybe a place to unwind.

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking on this but I've just started pondering something similar. In our case we want somewhere to stay for 1 night between Naples & Assisi, and we'll be driving. Not looking for a beach-type place as we'll have just spent a week on Ischia doing nothing. Ostia Antica is a thought.

caroline_
check out this accomodation in Ostia Antica http://www.rodrigodevivar.com/in/index.html
when are you guys going?

caroline_edinburgh Oct 26th, 2007 03:12 AM

P.S. We have been to Orvieto.

caroline_edinburgh Oct 26th, 2007 03:19 AM

Thanks sweetpdeb - that does look nice. However I now realise I've omitted 2 vital pieces of info which I always ask others... When - late June. Budget - fairly modest, i.e. €80-100 for a double. (This will - hopefully - be part of a 4 week trip; so this is the cheap week since we'll only be staying in places 1-2 nights & they don't need to be posh.) Also we would prefer to be in a small town rather than in the countryside.

sweetpdeb Oct 26th, 2007 03:26 AM

Caroline_
That place is in a small town not the countryside although they do have accomodations in both, though I guess you checked it out as to price??

Steve_James Oct 26th, 2007 03:59 AM

Hi caroline - How about Tivoli? I think that would be nicer than Ostia ...

Or ... Castel Gandolfo (- the pope's summer residence)/ Colli Albani?

Spoleto? Viterbo? Lake Bolsena?

Hi Steve. I was hoping you'd see this ! Thanks for all your suggestions - I'll look into them. Forgot to say that we have also previously stayed in Frascati, but didn't make it into Castelgandolfo proper - we set out to go there but ended up just having lunch in a place which was basically all restaurants by the beach on the opposite side of the lake - I forget what it was called ?

Sweetpdeb: oh right, I had got the impression it was all in the country - but didn't look too thoroughly as yes, I'm afraid it's out of our price bracket. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Caroline - If you prefer to stopover somewhere north of Rome, a great choice would be Pitigliano in southern Tuscany.
Slightly off route - but well worth the detour.

Or how about Todi?

Steve

Thanks again Steve - wow, lots of places to look up ! Have a great weekend.

Sweet,
We spend a lot of time around the volcanoes in Italy on our own. I haven't taken a tour with that company, but have run into them often. It's a great company and all the people on the tours seem to be having a wonderful time. I have some friends who want to do their new Eolian Islands tour (looks fantastic, but it's my favorite place in the world anyway). I have taken a number of tours with Globus and always had a great time. Looks to me like you are going to have a wonderful trip. So many options for you 2 extra days! Mammamia!!!
