Help Amalfi Coast
 

Hello, Planning a three day to the coast after a 11 day tour of Italy. Am looking at staying in Ravello because of the views (my wife's mother wants a terrace with a view over a cliff). Also our tour ends in Rome. Any suggestions to get to Ravello. I am thinking about the train to Salerno, then renting a car. Also I need to get back to Rome and thinking about staying at the Hilton at the airport. Any suggetions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. tHANKS

Ravello is high up and has amazing views. Another option is Positano, which has hotels with the cliffside views. I would not rent a car. You can train to Naples or Salerno and then take a bus, boat, or private driver. Even some locals are afraid to drive that coast.

The AC drive isn't all that difficult, but if you are going in season it gets very, very clogged.

You might want to compare the cost of a driver from Salerno to Ravello and back with that of a car rental.

Rather than staying at the airport your last night, I suggest staying in the city and having the hotel arrange for a cab or shuttle to FCO.

I agree, I would stay in Positano. I think the restaurants are better and they have nice ones on the beach to enjoy sun sets. I also agree with not renting a car unless you are truly experieced in driving in Europe. The huge tour buses on the amalifi drive are a bit to contend with. I don't know about hotels near airport in Rome, we stayed near the steps and took taxi arranged by our hotel for a very early morning flight, had no problems. I would always rather be away from airports if at all possible. I hope you have a wonderful time, it is a beautiful country.

Ravello, though very very pretty, is sort of remote. Positano, though much more touristy, though still pretty, is better situated.
Our hotel in Positano (as are most) was set in a cliff and we had a little private terrace that offered a stunning view.

Stay in Positano, and do a day trip to Ravello. Ravello is beautiful but you can enjoy most, if not all, in a day. Easy to get to from Positano.

Consider Praiano, halfway between Positano and Amalfi.

I agree with staying in Positano. And I wish that some of the travel sites would not discourage people from driving the amalfi coast. I was so scared to go there and rent a car, but thank goodness we did. It is not as bad as most think. It is a beautiful drive and wonderful to be able to stop your car and take pictures. Rent a car, stay in Postitano, drive to Ravello for lunch, drive to Sorrento and take the ferry to Capri....

You don't say what time of year but we found Ravello a bit cold in June, as it is high up. Also regretted staying several nights there - a day trip would have been enough.

Another vote for staying in Positano rather than Ravello.

Another vote for Praiano rather than Positano. While Positano is gorgeous we found it terribly busy and resort-like. We did just a day trip there and found it to be plenty.

Look at the Villa Maria if you really want Ravello. On the west part of Ravello, with stunning views. We had an evening drink in their restaurant & swore we would stay there next time.
