HELP! Am I too far away!!
 

Can anyone advise me, we have booked an apartment for 1 week its situated in London N19 in whats known as the"Whitehall conservation area" by highgate Village & Crouch end. We know we will need to travel in to center of London by bus etc but are we too far out for it to be an acceptable distance to travel, and is this a nice area?

Did you know that you posted this question twice? "Europe" is one huge forum which may be divided by the topic you choose for your post (eg United Kingdom) and by the words in your title. (eg "HELP! Am I too far away from central London?")

Anyway, I am topping this thread in the hope that someone may be able to answer your question.

If so I wouldn't worry too much. it is farther away from the center of things than I personally would recommend for a first time visitor. But it is not out in the boonies or anything. It is a fair walk to the nearest tube station. But it is only in zone 2 so your transit won't cost any more than if you were staying in Victoria or South Kensington. And the rent is very reasonable for London.

So - yes it is a bit far for quick trips back to the flat in the middle of the day (and I try to avoidede the dreaded Northern Line whenever possible). But it isn't far from Highgate and Hamstead which are terrific areas. You could do worse. I've stayed in Highgate a few times (but I will admit only when I got to borrow a friend's flat rent-free)

Wow! how did you know it is that apart are you psychic? am newish to fodors so not sure what topping is as mentioned in prev post. Anyway, just as a matter of interest what central parts of London would you recommend if we wanted somewhere nearer? which areas are best for 1st timers who want to use buses as im a bit claustaphobic

"topping" or ttt (to the top) is just posting something to bring the thread to the top of the list.

As for where to saty -My favs are Pimlico, South Kensington, Covent Garden, and Russell Square. BUT - you won't be getting a flat w/ a large terrace like the Crouch End one for anywhere near the same rent.

So you just have to weight the convenience of being in the center against the higher rents and probably less space.

If the flat was farther out, then I definitely recommend looking elsewhere. But a bargain is a bargain, and a terrace usually comes at a pretty high premium.
