help, advice needed about Switzerland
 

hello, <BR> <BR>my girlfriend and are dreaming about planning to travelto Switzerland this summer and would advice on great Chalet's or inn in the Bernese oberland area. Looking to stay in a quite moutnain like Grindwald ?, engde, wegen, or Lucern??? not sure which is the best town for location, apline beauty, and farmland. if an body has an great stay's or rentals the would like to share? <BR> <BR>thank's <BR>Carmine Actor NYC

I had a wonderful two weeks in the town of Reuti, Hasliberg region. We travelled all over from there, and stayed in a chalet up in the mountains. We hiked over to Grindelwald one day! For true small Alps charm in the Berner Oblerland I'd pick Gimmelwald. It is high, tiny and on a sunny day incredible. But! be forwarned it is a favorite Rick Steves haunt and if you have a problem with that you might not be happy. Personlly, I love it. Where else can you make a phone call at midnight home with a cowbells jingling in the background. For a larger place with more hotels, but still up in the mountains, I'd recommend Wegen or Murren.Murren is actually above Gimmelwald. Both towns have a variety of accomodations. Gimmelwald is some guesthouses, a hostel and 2 small inns,one run by an often grumpy, but lovable guy.

Did you mean a quiet mountain town?? <BR>If so, the main street of Grindelwald is working alive with people. It is a busy place. Your code name is interesting, Matterhorn. It is not in the Berner Oberland, but in that massive range on the other side of the Rhone River. <BR>I feel that the mountains around Zermatt and Saas Fee and Saas Grund are more awesome than the Berner Oberland, but the villages around the Berner Oberland are easier to get to and provide nice accommodations. <BR> <BR>My suggestion is to rent an apartment because they are cheaper than hotels. <BR>You can save even more by preparing some of your own meals. The catch here is that most rental periods are 7 days. <BR> <BR>The largest town in the Berner Oberland is Grindelwald followed by Wengen, Mürren, and Lauterbrunnen. <BR>I have elected to stay in Lauterbrunnen for a week several times because it is at the center of transportation for the region. I freely admit that Murren has nicer views, but getting up to and down from Mürren requires two changes of conveyence as you come in from Interlaken Ost train station. <BR>(No private cars go to Wengen or Mürren.) <BR>

My vote is for Wengen. My daughter and I stayed there 2 years ago and it was wonderful. The nice part is that you can easily vist Murren and other small villages during the day. If staying in Wengen, try the Alpenrose - reasonable and great! <BR>
