Help a student with a trip to Praque & Teresin

I am a student in Paris & have about 10 days in April to travel.I'd like to see Vienna, Prague, Teresin & Dresden (where I have a friend). My travel options include planes, trains & buses but not a car. I prefer inexpensive hotels to hostels & I will probably be traveling with some friends (not yet sure how many). I have a strong interest in opera & music, & in seeing Teresin. I have never planned a trip like this before & I'd love some help on a reasonable itinerary. Thanks

Hi S,

For cheap airfare see www.whichbudget.com

For trains see www.voyages-sncf.com and www.bahn.de.

I can't help much with the itinerary but did take a very moving tour of Teresin, which included the camp and the ghetto. I was close to emotional overload but am still glad that I did it; it's something I won't forget.

I took a tour from Prague that the hotel arranged. Teresin is about an hour's drive, depending upon the day (traffic). We traveled comfortably on a Sunday in a mini bus and our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and spoke English. I think we started around 9:00 or 10:00 and got back to Prague in mid to late afternoon. It was October and colder than Prague and I wished I'd worn a warmer jacket.

Lots of opportunities in Prague for reasonably priced concerts. Probably in Vienna as well.

Good luck. I think you'll have a wonderful trip.

Hi skiddy,

I think 3 days for each Vienna and Prague are sufficient. You must know yourself how many days you want to spend with your friend in Dresden - 4 days are excellent for exploring the city and some close small towns plus countryside (National Park). All three cities are fantastic for opera and music lovers.

I live in Dresden and can give you some advice for this city - but I think your friend could do too. So please let me know if you need info for Dresden.

I would travel by train. You could visit Terezin the day you are going from Prague to Dresden. Just don't take the International train, but take the regional train from Prague to Litomerice which is only a few km from Terezin. Hop on a bus there or take a taxi to Terezin (short ride, cheap) and back. Ira gave you websites for train travel - I prefer www.bahn.de (German railways).

I was in Prague two years ago. We booked our our tour to Terezin with Wittman Tours (they have a website and office that I think is off of Pariska Street near the Jewish area). We also did a Jewish history walking tour with Wittman Tours and both were great. Terezin is quite a moving experience as is the synagogues of Prague.
We went to the ballet and the Prague Symphony and both were very inexpensive and wonderful. I booked tickets on-line for the concerts but I am sure you could get tickets there.
Vienna is also amazing and full of art and music. You should be in music heaven in both cities.

Hi Skiddy,
I think dividing your time evenly among the three cities, with the extra day in Prague for the day trip to Terezin, is a good idea. I've never been to Dresden but I assume you'll want to spend a few days visiting with your friend.
In addition to musical performances at their main theaters - of which you should try to see at least one in both Prague and Vienna - both cities, especially Prague, also have many inexpensive concerts in churches. You can get tickets at the door.

For Terezin you would be best off on an organized tour - Wittman or other tours companies.
For concerts in Prague, if you can, go to the Rudolfinum or National Theatre and buy tickets in person - we got balcony seats for a ballet at the National Theatre for US$2. In Vienna we lined up for standing room tickets (choose the balcony ones)for US$3. Of course, there are regular - and much higher priced - tickets available at all locations. In Prague we considered the concerts in churches were very "touristy" and highly over-priced.
This was in November 2005.
Have a good trip.
