From an e-mail I sent to a friend who was headed for Paris on a budget:

5th arr. (Left Bank - near Sorbonne)
http://www.hotelsorbonne.com/ (Have stayed there twice. Check "special offers" for great rates.)
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75005stjacques2.htm (Have also stayed here twice.)
http://www.hotel-paris-minerve.com/ (on my "short list&quot
http://www.hoteldelesperance.fr/Page1.html (ditto)
http://www.pariserve.tm.fr/hotel/ecoles/ (Good location, and a little cheaper.)

6th arr. (Left Bank - St. Germain/Luxembourg Gardens area)
http://www.hoteldulys.com/ (Stayed here a couple of years ago. Slightly more $, but includes breakfast and is very close to the Seine.)
http://www.hoteldudragon.com/site_uk/page1.htm (Short list. Great rates for the area.)
http://www.hoteldanube.fr/ (Nice, but a bit more expensive.)
http://www.myhotelinparis.com/hotels/093.htm
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75006regs.htm (Another one I'd strongly consider.)
http://www.tour-notre-dame.com/la_to...dame/index.htm

4th arr. (Right Bank - near Bastille & gay/Jewish neighborhoods http://www.myhotelinparis.com/hotels/021.htm (Stayed here at the tail end of this last trip. Decor not as nice as many others, but great rates and interesting neighborhood.)

All of these places are small and popular, so they book up well in advance.

And from another:

http://www.hotel-du-globe.fr/ In the 6th.

http://www.hotelsevresazur.com/ In the 6th.

http://www.hotelgobelins.com/frame.html Near Gobelins Metro.

http://lesdegreshotel.monsite.wanadoo.fr/index.jhtml Right by Notre Dame.

Hope they help!

I like Grand Hotel de Balcons. Near Odeon metro stop and easy walk to Luxemborg RER.

The price should be close to what you are looking for.

I am going to Paris at the beginning of April ( never been there before kind of a celebration of life for me too and I;ve spent HOURS on the net looking foran affordable but'nice' room. I found teh Hotel France Albion which gets rave reviews ....not the 5th or 6th but the 9th with apparently super friendly staff. Just what I need as I'll be on my own and only have 4 days.

bookmarking for my next trip to Paris, after my first trip in April.

I sometimes feel like an old fart too. Plan to get a cortisone shot in my foot on Tuesday and hope that takes care of some of those aches and pains. Gotta get out and walk again so that I am in shape for the City Of Lights...

Have a grand trip, Degas.
