Help a Fat, Old Fart Find a Great Room in Paris

My second son and I are going to Europe. Its sort of a celebration of life - me for being still alive after all my hard living and precarious occupation and him just leaving school and embarking on a great career.

Here is the catch - due to a recent failed business venture and ruinous income taxes, Im a little strapped for cash. Okay, real strapped. So, I need a place that is relatively inexpensive, but not so bad that it will adversely color my sons nascent opinion of Europe.

I would stay at the French Officers Club again, but there is the matter of a little misunderstanding about a previous bill and a saucy maids outlandish accusations.

Requirements: In the 5th or 6th close to METRO/RER. And it needs to be quiet with a touch of charm and friendly staff (you know about my utter lack of patience with crabby foreigners).

I think I can scrap together enough to afford 120 to 140E for a twin room with private bath. A garden or rooftop view would be a plus. This will be in May so AC is not required.

This is serious post and Id appreciate some help. Of course, I will write a trip report and give you all the dirt on this boys week out on the town.

Check this one out, but don't tell them I sent you as I may want to go back again. And don't lead the lad astray!

degas: With your WONDERFUL walks how can you not know a place to stay?!

Try this place -- I love it and they are the friendliest people. Really nice rooms, great location.

Appreciate the suggestions. Yes, I berate myself now for not being more alert to moderate accomodations on previous trips. Easy to be lazy when somebody else is paying.

BTW: Degas -- Don't diminish yourself, even humourously, as a F.O. F.

Too many of those young creeps are ready to put us down (I'm reverting to the vernacular of youth) -- so don't anticipate/adopt their slurs.

Hotel du College de France (5th) http://hotel-collegedefrance.com/

You can actually stay there for a little under your budget -- the hotel's website quotes a rate of 115E for a superior twin room with bath.

One or more of the rooms on the top (sixth) floor have small balconies and views of Notre Dame. But the elevator only goes to the fifth floor, so if you stay on the top floor you have to walk up (and down) one flight.

Ted, I got on the scales at the gym this morning and was reminded once again that I'm in no danger of diminishing myself! But I appreciate your points about today's younger crowd.

Bree, thanks for the recommendation, under budget is a good thing!

And if you stay at Hotel du College de France there is a great restaurant near..out the door, turn left and on the right corner is Le Pre Vere...make a reservation...even your considerable charm may not get you in...

Funny I just asked a similar question a few weeks ago and now feel like an expert. How about Hotel Danube orhttp://www.hoteldanube.fr/htgb/frameset.htm
or Le Regent http://www.pariserve.tm.fr/hotel/regent/english.htm
or Abatial http://www.pariserve.tm.fr/hotel/abatial/english.htm

All highly recommended here.

We were perfecty happy with the Danube when we stayed there, although it has been a few years.
The location can't be beat!

Why do I not believe the old fat part of this title?

I can believe the "fart" part - a country boy must love pork rinds and baked beans!

You are only as old as you feel!

Today, I feel a 100. Darn treadmill lost power and stopped all of a sudden, dashing my hopes of a 5 minute mile! Seriously, my back is killing me now. Is there a good ambulance chaser on the forum?
