hello from Santorini....

Arrived 5 days ago - off to Mykonos tomorrow. From the lip of the caldera the cruise ships below look like monopoly game pieces. Rented a scooter for 3 days and have been tooling around to beaches abd towns. Coming back from Ammoudi today - low clouds were pouring over the mountains - spectactular. Both Fira and Oia are nightmares when the cruise ships and tour buses disgorge their passengers but when the day trippers leave, both are quiet pleasent. Staying Firostefano - perfect location - close enough to walk into Fira but far enough that the cruisers stay away. Have had some wonderful meals - Slatsa is terrific. Hotel Galini is just right - and the owners have recommendations have been spot on. Gotta run...

Big thank you to brotherleelove....

And I personally, like Athens.....

Lucky lucky you ! I'm green with envy but vow to make it back to the Greek Islands soon - we have several families from Lesbos in our city who supply us with fabulous olive oil!
I too loved Athens many moons ago & the only island visited was Skiathos.
When I think back over the years it must have impressed me because I can still hear the crunch of the silver white sandy road under my flipflops as we walked in the moonlight from the village up to our villa on the hill - amongst the olive trees goats moved restlessly and we heard their bells clunking around their necks as they were startled by our approach.
I was a young mother of 36 and our son, just two years old, slept in his carrychair on his daddy's back.
It was 1980.

Tod, you need to go back ... I didn't even START til I was where u are now -- and I can't seem to stop!

Skiathos would be a lot more touristic now -- but you can still find the quiet, and the symphony of goat bells if you look, and especially if you go in May or early June ... and if u are from UK don't do a package thing.

Try Crete, Amorgos, Sifnos, Samos, and in the Peloponnese ... lots of bells, the scent of thyme, wild flowers. Ah.

Carta, we loved the cocktails at night at the Cafe Galini. Very relaxing views and nice music.

Bye, Cova

Hello from Mykonos.

Arrived Sunday via catamaran. Chora is like following Alice down the rabbit hole - hundreds of passageways - it's fun to get lost. Rented a moped for the time here - the island is somewhat bare but in the afternoon light is beautiful. Having 11 pm dinners and going out to mix and mingle till 4 am - but lounging on the beach is a great way to catch up on needed sleep. Went to very quite beach yesterday -can't remember the name - but just right, waiter bringing me an ouzo every now and then,no music just the waves and wind. Decided to go to Super Paradise beach in the afternoon just to see - it was a scream - literally - I have never gone down such steep hills on a scooter. I kept praying my front brakes wouldn't fail. Went to Delos today then Pssarou this afternoon - very nice beach, great restaurant but expensive. Anyway - off for a drink - then maybe a nap, then dinner then out and about.

Watching peolpe take pictures of the pelicans is more entertaining than the pelicans.

good bye Athens....hello NYC

arrived late last night from Mykonos - one of the best pieces of advices I got, stay for the day and fly back to Athens late. Fell asleep, missed dinner - woke to grey clouds, rain and a chill in the air - I guess my vacation is over. Went to the National Archeological(sp?) Museum - as did a few other thousand people. Had a light lunch -then visited the Agora (?). Went back to the hotel for a nap - went back to restaurant I had already eaten at a couple other times ( a first for a trip) -ready to go home but in some ways wish I could stay.

Will post a brief synopsis once I'm back an adjusted...
