Hello again from Spain

I have tried twice to post under my original post but for some reason it will not let me so Iīm trying posting a new message.

My suitcases finally appeared in Bilbao and were sent to my hotel in Santander. We enjoyed beautiful weather in Santander and spent an afternoon in Sardinero beach( no swimming, water too cold!).

During my Picos excursion I tried the Cocido montañes, similar to Fabada Asturiana. Very yummy and filling.

Iīm now in Burgos for a couple of days and leave tomorrow for Madrid. Last night had the lechazo at Meson del Cid, good but pricey. It got very cold at night so I had to escape to my hotel freezing( donīt have appropriate clothes for this weather!).

Donīt want to post more until I see if this message takes. Talk later

Hi cruiseluv,
I'm so sorry you got trapped in the El Prat strike horror-saw the chaos on TV-can't imagine how frustrating/exhausting it must have been! But glad to hear you arrived safely in Santander, got in a beach day at El Sardinero and took an excursion to Picos. Wow, cold in Burgos? If I had know it would ever be cold there in the summer, we would have driven down to Madrid and overnighted there instead of flying down! Hope you and your son had a great time in the north. Was thinking about you

Un saludo,
Maribel

Hola Maribel,

Unfortunately, the pictures or video didnīt do "justice" to the debacle in the airport. Reality was worse that whatever they were showing on TV. And there were very tense moments when tempers started flaring and some peopleīs behavior got plain ugly.

On the other hand , I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction at the Hotel Lopez de Haro in Bilbao. I didnīt even had a chance to let them know that I wasnīt going to make it on Sat night , so on Monday I got an email from them telling me my credit card was being charged as a "no show". I sent them an email explaining why I didnīt show and they promptly sent me an email saying that they were crediting my credit card! Thatīs what I call a class act!

But now all is well! The wind has started picking up again in Burgos as the sun sets and itīs starting to get cold again! So I might not be able to venture very far tonight. I find Burgos to be a lovely city that grows on you. The Cathedral is magnificent and I also enjoyed the Monasterio de las Huelgas. La church in la Cartuja de Miraflores is being renovated so I didnīt go there.

Hola cruiseluv,
We were impressed by the service and kindness at the L de H too. I can imagine that tempers ran so very high at El Prat, it was frightening to be caught within the hordes of furious, exhausted, frustrated, displaced travelers. Hope this was your very last time ever to experience a wildcat Iberia strike! They misplaced my bags coming back, but that's usually a given the first days of August! Glad you didn't have to wait forever for yours!
We've always avoided Burgos in July-nice to know that it actually does get cool there once in a while in summer! Sorry you missed the Cartuja, but that gives you a nice reason to return on your next trip!
Hope you get a break from the heat in Madrid! Have a great remainder of your trip!

Thanks Maribel,

I hope you had a good time during your trip to the Basque region . "Good" that they lost your lugagge in the return and not in the outbound!

Iīm in Madrid today since I have to catch a morning flight to Pisa ( yes, it is in Iberia !). Itīs warm but not oppresive. Just had a dinner of tapas in Plaza Santa Ana. My favorite Cerveceria Alemana was closed so I went to Vinoteca Barbechera. Very nice and different tapas there and also Albariño by the glass!

cruiseluv- were we at the airport at the same time? I was there on Friday all day and then on Sunday morning until 12 when my flight finally left. What a horrible experience! I kept my head on until I got home on Friday night, then called my mother and promptly lost all composure. Tomorrow I fly from Málaga to Madrid and just the idea of going to an airport makes me want to carry a flask of strong whiskey with me.

Glad you are having fun!

Hola laclaire!

I was there around 9 AM on Friday when my flight from Newark landed ( i undrstand it was one of the last flights to land there, just my luck!). I came back Saturday AM for my flight to Bilbao and promptly descended into Dante's inferno! Spent there 14 hours, my flight was canceled etc! Went back Sunday , and finally after several delays left for Santander!

I know what you mean about going back to an airport. I felt the same way yesterday when I had to go to the airport in Madrid to fly Iberia to Italy! Thank God, everything went well! Hopefully for you as well!

Ciao! Maria

Maria, we were at both el Prat and Barajas at the same time! I spent all day Friday at the Prat, then finally left on Sunday around noon. On the 7th I arrived to T4 at around 14'30 and was here until 15'30. Now I am back. Random!
