Helen - info needed about lake tresmino area
I wonder if you or anyone else on the site can help me. We I am going to be staying in an apartment in Piana - Loc. Ferretto, Castiglione del Lago, do you know much about this area, and the best places to go for day trips out etc. There will be myself, husband children aged 4, 6 also my parents who are in their 60s, and my 13 year old nephew. I know where we are staying will have information on where to visit and eat etc and the owner has a minibus that for a fee he will take us to places where we'd like to go which is a bonus for us we are able to sample the wines etc, and not have to worry about having to get back to our accomodation, and they have 2 children the same age as my 2 so if they manage to pick up some of the language before we go maybe they will have some playmates. We went to Tuscany last year so have visited places like Siena, Pisa, San Gim. so at least we wont be having to do long journeys to these areas. Whilst I am there I want to buy some ceramic ware I have in mind is I think its like the anti-pasta serving dishes that once all placed together looks like a big serving dish, if you know what I am on about could you recommend the best place to go for this. Also my nephew is an avid football fan although I think we will be coming out of football season the 2nd 2 weeks in August do you know of anywhere that may be of interest for him, he did enjoy Pisa, San Gim. and Siena when he came with us last year but if we could find something with a football twist that would be a nice surprise for him.

This is a wonderful area to stay in. For ceramics, you are very close to Deruta but also, if you take the secondary road instead of the autostrada, there are numerous shops selling seconds. Sorry, I haven't had enough of coffee yet this morning to recall the names of the towns, but you can't miss them, they have it all outside the stores on the walkways . If shopping in Deruta, shop at the factorie stores below the town, a few of my favorites are Grazia, Cama and Peccetti. The first two are almost all costum orders that will be sent to you, but they do have seconds for sale, the latter has wonderful stuff, medium priced to take away or have shipped. At the end of this road, there is a big factory store that has very cheep ceramics, the quality of the painting is not as great as the above places, but it hasn't stopped me from buying. One of these places will have the piece you have described, if not all of them.
Lago Tressimino has a wonderful restaurant on an island in the middle, take the ferry and have a great lunch/dinner.
Gubbio, is not too far away, which also has a nice ceramic style, much different from the pieces in Deruta.
Have a great time

Lots of questions!
You will be staying in Umbria in late August, so obviously it will be hot and rather humid, so you may want to plan to make sure you aren't spending a ton of time trekking around outdoors.
As far as ceramics go, Deruta is definitely the most "famous" place in Umbria to go for them. They have a very definite style and I think you would have no problem finding what you are looking for.
As far as football (soccer) goes, I think your best bet for that is in Perugia. Their team (whose local supporters are known as grifoni (the griffins)) is a big deal in the area. Here is a link to the team website (in Italian):

I can't find any information on their schedule in August, but it looks like they are currently in the midst of playoffs, so they may be done by the time you get there. At any rate, the stadium is outside of Perugia and you could check that out.
As far as things to see - I'd head out to Isola Maggiore in the middle of Lago Trasimeno. It's very quiet and very beautiful, and St. Francis spent some time there during the 13th century so there is some history related to that. The island is pretty small and won't require more than half a day.
Passignano sul Trasimeno (nearby) is also nice for strolling along the lake - which is what most people do in the evening.
Other cities and towns nearby that I would recommend would be Perugia (http://www.perugia.com/indexen.htm), Arezzo, Assisi, and maybe Cortona.
You are also not too far from the Republic of San Marino, which is (I believe) the smallest independent republic in the world. It is kind of hilly (being perched on a mountaintop) but you can drive almost all the way up and the views from the top are absolutely stunning. There are quite a few things to do there, so would be an interesting choice maybe.
Another thought would be to visit the Perugina chocolate factory, which is just outside of Perugia in San Sisto. They have a museum and the smell in that area is unbelievable...
You could also try Citta' Della Domenica outside Perugia. There is a zoo, reptile preserve, and rides. Theme parky, but kind of neat. Here's a link to a site that describes it in english:

Also, just driving around the region and popping in where you feel like it is cool.
