Heidelbrg /Pfalz region help needed
 

I will be traveling with my family (2 adults, 2 young teens) and my parents to Germany in June and July. On one leg of the tour, we will be traveling from Trier to Heidelberg. Our travel agent has given us a few options for accommodations for 2 nights on this trip. I'm interested in thoughts on what would be the best option. We will be heading to Rothenburg after this.

• 2 nights at Winery Martin Bangerth --1 hour southwest of Heidelberg. We would have to visit Heidelberg and then drive back to winery for 2nd night. There is a 2 night minimum here.
• 1 night at either Johanneshof (25 km from Heidelberg) or Weinschlößchen Michel-Roos (1 hour from Heidelberg) PLUS 1 night at Heidelberg City Center .

I love the idea of staying at a winery for a night, but I have wondered if Heidelberg a city we should definitely consider staying in for a night? Is it worth the extra hour drive to/from Martin Bangerth to stay there 2 nights?

Other ideas of places to stay?

I've had a look at two of the places you mention, Weingut Roos Home and Winery Bangerth https://www.bangerth.de/gästehaus/ are in quite different places leading me to wonder why you are thinking of going there. IMO both of them lend themselves to longer stays than 2 nights which seems to me to be rather a waste of time if your main aim is to see Heidelberg. I certainly would not want to stay in a Vineyard an hour's drive from Heidelberg and then have to drive back to the Vineyard in the evening.

I also think that your kids may find staying for more than one night in a Vineyard rather tedious; Heidelberg would be much more exciting.

So if these are the choices I would go for the Weingut Roos for a night and Heidelberg for the next night. BTW I didn't know which Johanneshof you were talking about - was it the one next to the Rhein near Hockenheim?

I don’t know the places you mention that are outside of Heidelberg, but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed Heidelberg itself, and depending on your interests, I can easily imagine that 2 nights there might be a very good option.

Both of these wineries are ok, though there are hundreds of places like them. You'll note that there is a train line that would take you into Speyer or Hberg, Worms etc and would overcome driving (which I always think is a good thing to do). There also often good walking trails to the next village for different meals etc. The best wineries in Pfalz are along the water escarpment at the back of the Pfalz plain starting in Bad DUrkheim. You'll also find a bunch of very safe bike paths in the area called something like carrot and swede etc.

You know the kids well enough so you know how to entertain them.
