Heidelberg is nice during Christmas. They will have their market set up in the old town area. I would recommend getting a hotel in that area so you can easily walk around and enjoy the festivities. Great part of town and one of our normal stops on trips to Germany.

I agree that the Christmas market in the old town in a lot of fun. Heidelberg is a great town to visit but I can't figure out how it is on the road from Frankfurt to Dresden. Another stop to consider is
Rothenberg odT.

if we were to do this it would cost us an extra 200 usd per person to change our tickets. do you feel it is worth it.

Do what? Fly into Frankfurt, side trip to Heidelburg? I don't know Dresde but Heidelburg and Rothenberg are well worth the visit.
