Heathrow to Gatwick
 

We found a fliight to Rome which has a stopover in London...but lands at Heathrow and takes over from Gatwick. How difficult is it to get from one to the other...and is it BAirs responsibility to get us there?

No it's your responsibility. There are connection buses that run between the airports. You need to allow for a minimum connection time of 3 hours; 4 or 5 is more comfortable, depending on time of day, day of week, etc.

Dunnbv - Bus is best. There are departures about every 15 mins.

Sceduled journey time is 75 mins - but it can take longer depending on traffic.

Fare: £18.00 single.

Please note however that whilst it's only 75 minutes between the airports, you do have to add at least 3, preferably 4, hours to account for stupid little things like immigration, collecting luggage, customs (yes they do sometimes check), getting to the coach station, buying a ticket (you do have some GBP), waiting for the next coach as invariably you will just miss one, finding your checkin desk to get your boarding card (unless you got it at point of origin), standing in a queue, going through security, etc etc.

Also if you are on separate tickets note that your luggage allowance won't be the Transatlantic luggage allowance but nearer 20kg (see airline website)

And if you are travelling by Low Cost Airline note that they close checkin PRECISELY 30 or 40 minutes before the flight is due to depart, so even if you are in the process of being checked in you won't get on the flight

If everything goes perfectly, you have a chance, albeit slim, of making the transfer in three hours. In addition to the variables already listed (like heavy traffic), you could be late arriving at Heathrow. Even four hours is risky. I'd allow a minimum of five.
