heathrow terminal 4

I checked the Heathrow site and couldn't find the info. Does anyone know if terminal 4 construction is complete for access to the underground?

Just bookmarking, because I want to know as well. Thanks.

Some time this month, September 2006.

Mid September according to http://tinyurl.com/rlpb7 but don't bet on it until it happens

Robespierre Sep 4th, 2006 08:37 AM

According to http://www.tfl.gov.uk, operations resume 18 September.

Well that's 5 days too late for me.

In looking at my Tube map I see that I can take the Piccadilly line right to the Gloucester Road station. Hotel is a block away. Is this a good way to get to the hotel with just a couple bags? Any train changes necessary? Do I just go to the station in one of the other terminals?

Thanks!

There is a replacement bus to Hatton Cross to pick up the Piccadilly Line. No other change required. But make sure you can handle your baggage up a few stairs - I can't remember exactly how many there might be between the Piccadilly Line and the street at Gloucester Road but there must be some.

Thanks Patrick!

I had read that you could walk to the other terminals to get on the Tube, but I'll take the bus. Stairs should not be a poblem.

Thanks again!

You can also ride the Heathrow Express between terminals. It's free.

"I had read that you could walk to the other terminals to get on the Tube" . . . Not from Terminal 4 you can't. T-1, 2 and 3 are really next to each other and walkable - but T-4 is about 2+ miles away

Thanks janis! Good to know that before I start walking! :-)

I'll also look at the express. Maybe I'll just flip a coin. :-))

< I'll also look at the express. Maybe I'll just flip a coin >

Why, it's more expensive, you'll have to use the Tube anyway & it it'll take just as long to get to Gloucester Road

While it's true, as Robespierre pointed out, that HEX is free between the terminals, it's a long walk (with elevator and escalator access, though) from where you exit the secure airside of the terminal to the HEX platform, and then another fairly long walk from the HEX platform to the tube stop.

It would be easier to take the replacement shuttle bus from T4 to the Piccadilly Line. When we were at Hatton Cross a month or so ago, there were porters at ground level and on the tube platform to help people carry luggage up and down stairs, if they needed help.

Robespierre Sep 5th, 2006 06:45 PM

Okay, but I wouldn't count on porters for assistance at Hatton Cross. I have no reason to doubt that there may have been some, but I've never seen any.

Meanwhile, at LHR you get to use luggage trollies from baggage claim to train to train.

B_in_d: From the Piccadilly line at Gloucester Road station there are 26 steps from the platform to the lower lift level. I have done this many times to and from Heathrow and as long as you can manage the stairs with your stuff it is no problem. Don't try to struggle through the normal exit gates with lots of stuff. Instead, have an Underground staff member manually open a gate for you. In my experience there is always someone around to do this. Don't forget to touch your Oyster Card (if you have one) on exiting.

b_in_d Sep 6th, 2006 03:10 PM

Thank you Gavin.

After reading the baggage counselling thread, I've decided to pare down my bags to just a single roller to check and a small messenger to carry on. But it is good to know that I can have someone help with the gates.

Thanks again!
