Heading from Amsterdam to Zurich - would like to see something in Germany
We have friends we're staying with in Amsterdam and then in Zurich. My kids (9 and 7) and husband are German and we'd like to see something in Germany during a day trip, but not sure what. We could see something on the way to Zurich (have not booked trains/flights) or do a day trip from Zurich or Amsterdam. Any suggestions? We'll be there in August. Thanks!!

Stuttgart for the Mercedes-Benz factory and museum - if interested in cars Stuttgart is smack on the main route from Amsterdam to Zurich
Or you could go via the Rhine River and do a short few-hour boat ride on K-D boats - k-d.com official site.

That's a great idea, my 9 year old boy would love it. We'd probably fly to Zurich since it seems pretty cheap (was going to take the night train, but can't believe how expensive it is) and take a train to Stuttgart at some point from Switzerland.

From Amsterdam a day trip to Germany could go to Cologne, not far by train and right next to the station is the world-famous Cologne Cathedral, one of the world's most famous and largest Gothic cathedrals - Cologne has a sweet riverfront walkway along the Rhine and a nice pedestrian shopping zone. For info on German, Dutch, Swiss trains, etc check out these IMO fine sites - www.seat61.com (good info on discounted tickets like for 29 euros to Cologne each way - much cheaper than full fare) and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.rickstevees.com.
As for the night train there are some cheap discounted 4-person compartments and if you figure on saving the cost of a hotel may be affordable after all - scour www.bahn.de/en for various fares and special fares.

My sister-in-law thought Cologne would be too far from Amsterdam (where they live). I'm starting to think a day trip to Stuttgart from Amsterdam is probably too long too. I have finally found some good fares (call agents that work with bahn)so I think the night train might be happening...and we can see Germany at night!
