I really don't mind much about smoking in restaurants (as I said before, I am a smoker, but it really doesn't matter to me either way), the only thing that gets me is airports that are non smoking! I'm talking about a smoking lounge--an entirely seperate room where smokers can smoke. It doesn't effect non-smokers in the SLIGHTEST, and really burns me up that every airport does not have a smoking lounge.

The reason you can still smell smoke at Schiphol is because smoking is still allowed in the bars etc there. I assume when the ban comes in it will cover these too. They do have designated smoking rooms as well I believe. Never having smoked I haven't really paid much attention to these.

Just curious: Does the situation differ with regard to clubs and bars in the UK?
Reason why I ask: Here in Germany, club owners want to declare their place "member-only". You will pay a very small member fee at the entrance, and this will keep the club or bar from being a "public place".

I hope it includes train station platforms that are not enclosed - the current law in France bans smoking inside the station but not on the platforms and some of these are barely open and i found lots of smoke going up my nostrils waiting for trains.

It is forbidden to smoke on the platforms if they have a "roof" of some sort.

Ridiculous - not having toxic life-threatening smoke coming up my nostrils is called "behavior Nazis" - booze is different - there is no osmosis to me from nearby drinkers.
Yes drinking can destroy families, etc. and drunks can kill on the road - that's why strict enforcement of drunk driving laws are now in effect most places.
Smokers - your right to smoke end at my nostrils - and there ain't anything Nazi about that. It's called common decency which i think you lack.

I don't think many smokers realize how obnoxious second hand smoke can be. I think they enjoy it so much they can't understand the non-smokers plea.
When alcohal drinkers start trying to pour liquor down my throat in a public place then there will have to be a law for that too.

What about Brit train stations? I know I've smoked--and have seen plenty of others smoking--inside Paddington, Victoria, etc. Not on the platforms, but in the main part of the station. Is this against the law, but just sort of not taken seriously? (until now, perhaps?)
I, along with many others, light up on the Eurostar platform at Waterloo..though the last time I did that, I was told "no smoking allowed". Not sure if the rule was ALWAYS in place or just a recent thing.

i think they do and just don't care - "it's a free society BS", etc. Well it's not a free society to inflict harm on others and some folk are extremely allergic to smoke and can be life threatening perhaps.
I just find this attitude of "Nazi" so repulsive and unthinking but it won't change their nihilistic attitude. If i splattered them with 256 or so different toxic substances they may take a different take.

Next...hopefully a ban on smoking in hotel rooms. Not only is it a health hazard for the poor individual who gets the room next, but it is a fire hazard. Many chains are now going 100% no smoking...it should be done forthwith.

endlesssummer, you made me burst out laughing! I, too, have never had a cigarette and I frequently tell my husband, who was a 2 pack a day guy before we met that he wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell if he were smoking when we met because I wouldn't have even kissed him!
And I posted on another thread but don't have the energy to find it that I live in Lausanne which is the seat of the EU HQ of Philip Morris and the EU HQ of BritAm Tobacco is in Geneva so I don't foresee a ban here any time soon. Much to my dismay and that of my clothing, lungs and hair.

"then austerlitz station from which i commute to from Les Aubrais is not enforcing the law at all. Even conductors can be seen smoking there".
I don't know about Austerlitz but I was in Montpellier station 3 weeks ago and there were warnings over the loudspeaker every 3 mn or so. I guess it depends on the stationmaster and staff available.
It's part of the Feb 2007 law

there were similar warnings broadcast at Austerlitz too. And i was in other Parisian stations where smokers were on the covered platforms - that's why i thought the ban did not extend to the half open platforms.

>Since I love to drink, I will be in the pub more, not less .... My brother, a life-long smoker, says that his bank balance is swelling. He is simply sitting at home and smoking. Sad. I do wish he would give it up.<
Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?
