Hay on Wye

Would it be possible to take public transportation from London to Hay? I would like to get to Hay but I cannot drive. I am not sure about the trains or buses.

Hay on Wye is about 20-25 miles fromm Hereford. You can take a train to Hereford and then buses from there to Hay-on-Wye

If you want to get there and back in a day it's not straightforward, as there aren't any direct trains to Hereford getting in early enough to catch a bus that'll give you any time in Hay. You have to go a more roundabout route through Newport.

Go to the "door to door journey planner" at www.transportdirect.info for details. It's not the most user friendly of sites, and it sometimes tells you towns don't exist. Hay does, and details of how to get to it ARE on the site.

If you are going for the festival (May 24 through June 3, 2007) you might be able to share a ride from Hereford:

Otherwise, perhaps you could contact one of the taxi companies to get a fare quote.

I hope you weren't asking about doing it as a day trip. I assumed you meant visiting for a few days (or at least a couple of days) because the logistics aren't good for an up and back.

thanks for all your help. I am off to Hay and I am staying for 3 days. I really appreciate those of you who are so kind to take the time and give such good directions.
