Have you ever rented from a small, local car rental company?

We usually rent through brokers like Nova or Auto Europe. We've also rented directly from Sixt. This trip we are looking at rentals in Lithuania. Nova doesn't rent in Lithuania. Quotes from AutoEurope, Sixt & the major car companies are very high. However, I am finding very good rental rates from small locally owned firms. These are newer up-to-date cars, and the rental arrangments seem okay. In the past we've always stuck with more well-known firms, but this time I think I will try one of these small local firms.

Is there any valid reason not to go this route? By the way, I know AutoEurope says they will match others' rental rates; last year they wouldn't do this for us because the rate I had found was so much lower than their price.

How confident are you that you understand what is and isn't covered in the contract when it comes to what your credit card is being charged in total and what your liability is in case of an accident?

Another consideration regarding renting from local firms is whether or not you plan to stay in the immediate area. If you intend to go far from the base, and if you have trouble while away, getting problems solved may be an issue. Once (in this country) we rented from a local rental company, then drove four hours away where we lost the key to the car. Our friends had a (minor) accident in Italy last year while we were there. Sixth came to get them, put them in another car, etc. All that took a long, long time even though they were only about 20 miles from the nearest rental place. I would dread to think how long it would have taken if they had been farther away. Just a consideration. PJK
