Have you driven Route des Cretes?
Considering driving the Route des Cretes (Route of the Mountain Crests) but not sure if it is worth it or do something else?? How long did it take to drive, stop for lunch?? Please advise. Thank you!

I think there are several "Routes des Cretes". If you are referring to the one along the Gorges de Verdon - it's the only road I have ever been frightened on. Dirt in some places with no guard rail. In peak season, it is a one-ay road, so that helps (it was a one-way when we drove it). I have never been scared on a road before & I've driven the Amalfi coast several times, Highway #1 in Calif (where I've lived for over 55 years), The Alps, Pyrenees, and several other roads that people consider difficult to drive on.
There is no place to stop for lunch - except maybe to loose lunch !!!. Stu Dudley |
This route I am looking at includes St. Jeannet, Gattieres, Carros-Villages, Le Broc,Bezaudunles-Alpes, Coursegoules, Col De Vence...Thanks

That's a nice drive. The section from St Jeannete to Gattieres is nothing special, but once past Gattieres it's quite scenic. There is some congestion during the morning rush hour around Carros. It shouldn't take long - 2-3 hrs perhaps round trip from Vence. I've never stopped for lunch on this route, but the restaurant outside Coursegoules looked quite interesting when we peeked in, but I may be confusing that restaurant with one near Vercous which is west of Gilette.
The Gorges du Loup is a nice drive also. Stu Dudley |
My husband drove it last September while I sat white-knuckled in the passenger seat. It was great fun! We started driving in Moustiers and did the loop, so Moustiers is where we ate lunch. There are lots of pull-over spots on the road so you can get out and admire the view. It's really scary in parts and I'm not one who scares easily...but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. It was so scenic and beautiful. Don't know how long it would take you because that's dependent on the traffic and the time of year you go. We did it in early October and practically had the road to ourselves, but even still we drove for about 3 hours.
