Have you been to the Ferrari Museum in Italy
 

Has anyone been to the Ferrari Museum near Bologna? My 18 year old son is a car enthusiast and I'm wondering if this is worth a side trip from Rome.

My husband went when we were in Florence last October. He says there are two Ferrari museums and both were worthwhile but the Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena was his favourite. www.museomodena.ferrari.com

You can't tour the factory itself unless you own a Ferrari. You can pay extra to have a tour of the test track.

He had a car to get around but there is a shuttle from the train station in Modena to the factory in Maranello and then there is a shuttle between the two museums.

My husband booked his tickets online before we left on our trip, it saved some money and saved lining up in the queue.

If you look at the sites you can see what special exhibits will be on while you are there and you can look under ticketing to see the pricing options etc.

The photos he took were pretty impressive so if your son is keen he would likely really enjoy this. My husband also toured the Ducati museum in Bologna which he really enjoyed as well.

Yes, I have visited the museum, but would never do it as a day trip from Rome unless I was in Rome for more than a week.

It would be 2 1/2 to 3 hours by train each way from Rome to Modena.

The good news is that the Enzo Ferrari museum in Modena is a short walk from the train station and IMO is a better museum than the one near the factory in Maranello. It comprises two buildings. One is the original factory and house, and there are a couple of older Ferraris on display. The other building is a modern structure with a permanent display on the history of Ferraris and racing in Italy and a large exhibit space which contained dozens of Maseratis when we were there.

The museum in Maranello gets the bus tours and many more small children. Some visitors never get past the gift shop, but all of the display areas feel cramped and crowded. There is a driving simulator and we noticed a few people touching the cars, so the whole thing felt more like a theme park than a museum.

Ferrari operates a shuttle in a loop from the Modena train station to the museum in Modena to the museum in Maranello and then back to the Modena train station. You can buy the shuttle ticket online. You can also buy tickets for a bus "tour" of the factory in Maranello, but you don't see anything but the exterior of buildings along a couple of streets and a peek at the test track. No getting off the bus, no photos. My husband enjoyed it, but I thought it was a bit of a bust.

Bologna itself is worth several days, for its history as the northern centre of education, its food (lots more than the sauce) and its distinctive architecture.
