Have you been to Meaux, France?
If you have visited, please let me know what your impressions are. Is the WW1 museum near the town or is it a taxi ride to get there? Thinking about a day trip from Paris.
TIA

yeah, I've been there as I like military history. I only went for that, it's an easy trip. I didn't spend any other time there, but it's supposed to have a nice old town, cathedral, the usual. I suppose you could take a taxi, I don't know if there are ones ready at the train station or not. I just took the bus, it's not far. The museum itself was fantastic. Meaux is included in zone 5, I believe, if you have a Navigo Decouverte pass taht should cover it, it's a Transilien line from Gare de l'Est, takes less than an hour.
There are bus stops right outside the train station and one goes right to the museum.
This is the bus system https://www.iledefrance-mobilites.fr...meaux-et-ourcq
The bus no 10 goes right there, you can view its plan.

You've probably seen what to do, but this is a good summary, I think. It explains transport also, it says line P which sounds familiar (from gare de l'Est).

Christina, thank you so much! I appreciate the bus info. And I had not seen the link you posted about Meaux. Wonderful information. It sounds like it could be a very full day. Thank you again.

Like Christina, we took the bus from the station. Our Navigo passes were accepted for the fare. After visiting the museum, we walked around the town a bit and enjoyed a small sandwich of Brie de Meaux that was delicious. From the cathedral back to the station was a pleasant 10-minute walk, half of which was along a river.

I think that no. 10 bus is all you need. It looks like it goes from the gare through the center of town to the museum and back.
I don't know why I didn't do more when there, that isn't like me. My main goal was the museum as I had read articles about it when opening, but of course I didn't spend more than a couple hours there. Maybe the weather was bad or I hadn't taken the time to research other things in town, don't know. I'll have to go back given how easy it is to go there. I was planning a WWI history trip this month and it would have fit in with that (Verdun, etc), but I changed plans so who knows, maybe next year.
I don't think there were any other American tourists out there but me.
I do like brie, also, but a little goes a long way with me, I can't imagine a sandwich of brie!
Now I would love to see those re-enactors but sounds like that's in april -- kerouac, you'll have to go for that to get some good photos!

There is an article in the English language newspaper the Connexion that I will try to send you about an exhibition on nurses in the First World War at the Museum of the Grande Guerre in Meaux that runs till December 31 2023. Looks very interesting.

Meaux
We were in Meaux last year at the beginning of December and it was very cold. We went by train as a day trip from Paris. The Saturday market was fabulous. Huge (I mean really huge) pots of paella and whatever. It looked delicious but since I don't eat shellfish... We took a bus to the WWI museum. It was worth seeing. A little heavy on all the WW1 uniforms but still interesting. We took a taxi back to town and walked the cathedral grounds. Very lovely. There's a Chapon chocolate store in Meaux that we really enjoyed . They sell this chocolate mousse confection that's delicious. The same store can be found near Saint Sulpice church in Paris. Meaux was worth the visit, and I'm guessing it would be even better in good weather. Off topic... If you're looking for day trips from Paris, I recommend Saint- Germain-en Laye. Especially in the fall with the trees changing color. Spectacular.

What I liked best at la musee de la Grande Guerre was its concerns with everyday life, not just great men/battles. Its special displays seem consistently interesting. My favourite sight: A double-height wagon, resembling a wild-west stagecoach, except it carried messenger pigeons.
