I guess it's about perceived interest; and money - budgets, etc. Unless it is a really big story most news outlets take what's fed to them - which sort of indicates that that's what the American news providers want the outside world to know.

I went to a Spanish wedding -Spanish bride, British groom - and the Spanish women were determined not to be upstaged by the British hat-wearers, so they all dashed out to get hats. Many of the British women left their hats at home as it isn't Spanish custom, and all had to dash round Madrid buying hats as they weren't going to get upstaged by the Spanish!

In the end, we all looked fab, and the Spanish LOVED wearing hats.
