Has anyone visited Castle Colditz?

I was in the former Eastern Germany and saw a sign for Castle Colditz, but didn't have time for a visit. Has any Fodorite visited it? If so, what did you think of it as a tourist destination.

Are you familiar with why it is famous? Have you read any of the books or seen the movies?

Of course. I know that it was a supposedly very secure prison for allied POW's. I think I've seen a movie about it.

When I return to eastern Germany, I'd like to visit it.

It is on my list. However, from what I heard and read it is only a *must* if you're particularly interested in the POW story. Large parts of the castle are occupied by the youth hostel and the State Music School.

If you want to see castles then there are better choices in Saxony.

Yes, but like PegontheRoad, I would love to see it for its history.

Sorry, Peg, to underestimate your knowledge, but the original post lacked any details to let us know that you wanted to do more than just look at castles.
