Has anyone stayed in Wengen?

I'm going to Switzerland for the first time in May and I'm staying at the Hotel Belvedere in Wengen. Has anyone stayed there? Is Wengen a good choice? How expensive is the Jungfraujoch? Any info. you could provide would be much appreciated.

Haven't stayed at the Belvedere. We much prefer Muerren, but Wengen is a good second choice.

Wengen to the Jungfraujoch is CHF 130. If you get the first train and return before the Noon departure back the price is only CHF 91. Ask for the Good Morning ticket. We've stayed in Wengen and really enjoyed it. Take the cable car up to the town above it (Manlichen?) and then walk down through the meadows. It's one of my favorite memories of Switzerland. Note also that there are some lovely cafes which are located in out of the way places, reachable by walking from the center of Wengen.

Hello Jeff,
Wengen is a wonderful place and you won't be disappointed. IMO, definately spend for the somewhat expensive trip to Jungfraujoch - you won't be disappointed if its a clear day. Also second the suggestion to take the cable ride to Mannlichen, if possible. You can either hike down the valley to Grindelwald or make a circle hike via Kleine Scheidegg to get a closer view of the north face of the Eiger. We enjoyed hiking down the other direction to Lauterbrunnen and watching the waterfalls get closer as we descended down a beautiful pine forrest path. I highly recommend Ed and Julie's web site listed above. They have a great section on whether to "do" the Jungfraujoch and/or some of the other options for great Alpine vistas in the area. Have a wonderful trip.

Regarding the cable ride to Mannlichen, it was out of commission last July due to avalanche damaging the tower on the Wengen side, unless they have worked awfully fast, I doubt that the cable car is back in operation.

The area is wonderful. When we went we stayed in Murren, a car free village. We did go down to lauterbrunen and visited Wengen which is much busier than muren. Our first day was cloudy and foggy which is why we did the walking and shopping. Our second we went to the top of the Schlithorn on the Murren side for breakfast in the revolving restaurant. The view was fantastic. That side too was cheaper in the morning. It is such a memorable area.

Maennlichen cableway was supposed to reopen in December (for skiing season) but I believe did not. I've sent off a note to Wengen TO to verify.

If someone will keep this near the top I'll post the reply when received.

Ed

The Wengen Tourist Office's reply was to send a copy of the Maennlichen home page. Friendly folk ... guess they're trying to attract tourists with the brevity of their replies.

Nothing is said on that page about the service not operating, so one presumes it is back in service by now. Or perhaps they do not know.

If you read German the page is at www.maennlichen.ch If you only read English perhaps they would like you to visit another destination.

Ed
