Has anyone spend new year in Italy? How was it?

I will be in Italy from the 26th of December to the 8th of January and would like suggestions where to spend New Year. I am thinking of going to Amalfi, Rome, Florence and Venice but if New year is nicer anywhere else I am willing to listen.

The New Year celebrations are big everywhere here but they can be very expensive and you have to book well in advance. The usual thing is a VERY large meal that goes on for ever, fireworks and then dancing.

Sometimes a place is too crowded and food/service is not as good as normal.

There are some very good events in Umbria - including Umbria Jazz (Winter) in Orvieto and some excellent hotels organizing a 3-day break.
The largest open air and free celbration is probably the one that takes place every year in Piazza Plebiscito in Naples. in most big cities there is some kind of open-air celebration, just like anywhere else. A friend of mine had a very good time at an open.air celebration in Sam Gimignano. These are always free, but you usually have to self-cater.

I will be in Rome at the same time. Did this 2 years ago. A great time to be in Italy. The weather is good, the crowds are small.

Plan on daytripping to Orvieto, Florence, Naples(Pompeii) and possibly a quick flight to Palermo.

Want to spend a little more time at the Vatican than last time. Slower pace.

Anyway, send email if I can help.
