Just wanted to add something to Bill's tip - although it's never happened to me, the airlines always recommend that you also have contact details INSIDE your bag. That way, just in case the tags on the outside get destroyed/lost, they can still find ID info.

Also, don't forget to keep your receipts WITH you for anything you may have bought on the trip. While the things we buy typically have more sentimental then monetary value, without the receipts the airline will decide replacement value.

I lost my luggae four times in a year! First on BMI British Midland, then on Swiisair, then on Sabena and most recently on Continental.

It does happen and I think in 2000 I was very unlucky. When BMI British Midland lost it they could not find it for several weeks whilst all the others found the luggage within a few hours.

All of them offered very decent compensation except Continental. In fact BMI British Midland were ridiculously generous and I hope they lose my luggage the next time I fly.

If an airline loses your luggage do make a big thing about it and demand to see a senior manager. A lot of people get fobbed off with £50 or a some flight vouchers. Do not stand for compensation like this which is insulting.

Can you get some sort of compensation for delayed luggage? If so how do you go about it?

What should have I done in this situation:
We were flying BA from BWI (Baltimore) to Bordeaux with a stopover in Gatwick. To get to Baltimore, we flew TWA from STL (Saint Louis). The luggage was tagged all the way to Bordeaux but apparently (as per BA account) did not arrive on time at BWI for the flight to Gatwick/Bordeaux. Hence the luggage was delayed for about 36 hours. I did not ask compensation from BA of any kind because I thought BA really did not have anything to do with the delayed luggage but TWA. WAs I right? Thanks.
