Has anyone had their carry-on weighed on TAP (Air Portugal) ?

It has been many years since I have used TAP for my twice yearly trip to Portugal but the next trip I will make is booked with them (great fare).

I see on their website that carry on is limited to 8 kilos or 17.6 pounds and overal size of 45 inches. ...getting like the discount european airlines. The overall size does not seem unusual but the weight limit seems very low to me. I usually put heavy items in my carry so as not to exceed the 50 lb limit on one checked bag. Also my wheeled carry-on is rather heavy itself.

Has anyone flown recently with TAP and did they weigh your carry-on at check in? If they do I will probably have to load up all pockets and carry a coat with pockets loaded too. I hate all these new limitations with flying!!

My daughter just flew with them last week from valencia to Lisbon and yes, they weighed her 8- lb. carry-on.

She continued to Miami.. and is returning tomorrow so I will ask her what the situation was in Miami since you will be originating in the USA.

I wouldn't chance it though. It is probably hit or miss, but if you get stuck with check-in people who strictly follow rules.. won't be fun.

Lincasanova,

Thanks so much for the info. I will be flying on TAP out of
Miami as I can drive there from Savannah (leaving car at relatives). I would love it if you would let me know if her bag was weighed in Miami as this is not the norm as most US carriers that I know of are most concerned with size of carry-on.

I do think you are right that it is best not to chance it. I loved it years back when we could really "stock" our place with 2 bags of 70 pounds the allowance with an economy ticket.
If it is easier to email me my email is [email protected] in advance if you can.

Carol.
I cannot help with the carry on information because I am flying SATA out of Boston. This is also a Portuguese carrier and I am glad you mentioned this as I will take care in case they weigh carry on.

But I wanted to also tell you that we are renting a car from a company I have never used before
www.portugal-car-rentals.com. The price was very good. I realize that we rent an automatic and you do not but just in case you do need to rent a car check them out.
p.s. our flight costs were not so good this time!

Sher, I will check out that company and maybe bookmark them for future use. I have booked a car from a small local company in the town I live near (in Portugal). Much better rate than I have ever gotten with Autoeurope which seems high these days. Maybe this company is even better.

Watch out for the hidden daily road tax that sometimes is added to the quote making it not so "low". Also if driving in Portugal many of the larger connecting highways have a new transponder system of tolls. You have to pay at a post office if you do not have a transponder.

I just checked SATA and their website is saying that the carry on is only 6 kilos which is even less than TAP. So this should be interesting because by the time I take all of my husband's medication including his diabetic supplies, a change of clothes for both of us (don't want to be stuck with no undies if they lose our luggage) and some reading material and reservation info that adds up to the weight pretty fast.

Carol. I am aware of the road tax. I am able to set my GPS for no tolls and this is what we will do for at least the last two or three days as I understand it takes that long for the system to load and then you are not able to pay tolls you might have on the last day.

I am getting this automatic for 16 days for E567 whith the usual excess which is not a problem in Portugal with my World card from MasterCard. There is E20 for an extra driver and road tax is supposed to be included.
The prices at Auto Europe were $1500.00 for the same class of car with the same conditions even more if I wanted any kind of excess coverage. When did they get that expensive? The same for Auto Europe.PT.
The company lists itself as a broker and get you a car from different vendors including Budget and Hertz. The only thing is they bring the car to you at the airport. The Vodaphone office calls them when you arrive.
I am up for a little adventure!

Sher, your husband can carry his own carryon with meds etc, since carryon in by person or seat, not by couple. But you probably knew that.

6 kilos is 13 pounds each, plus what goes into a personal item (which may also get weighed). The personal item for you would be a pocketbook, for him a briefcase or camera bag or computer bag. Can you get 7 or 8 pounds of stuff in one of those? Sure.

But be aware that Air France, for example, has fairly low limits for the carryon suitcase, but the combined purse and suitcase may weigh 27 lbs together, which isn't all that bad. But they can and will weigh your purse if the plane is packed.

lincasanova, Thanks for the post. Our carry ons will probably not be weighed in Miami but no doubt in Lisbon for our return flight it is very possible. Best plan is to go with the large canvas "gym bag" and ditch my heavier roll aboard.

Sher, You are really paying a high premium for an automatic. We are just back from 32 days in Portugal, rented a Peugeot 208, 5 door (hatchback) AC, but standard, which cost us about 550 euros. We used Economy Car Rentals who placed our rental with Holiday Car rentals. They did bring the car to the airport and met us just inside the arrivals area. We had a few anxious moments when on returning the car to the front of the arrivals area in Lisbon where we were instructed to meet the representative, police started telling us we could not stay in that area. We quickly got their Lisbon office on the phone who explained that someone was on their way. All turned out fine but we were picturing missing our flight and not being able to find the guy.

We have an unbelievable deal for the fall 2012 trip over which is Oct into Nov. For an Opal Corsa 5 door, AC all inclusive we will pay 13 euros a day for the Oct portion and 10 euros for the Nov portion...pick up at Faro airport where we are flying to from Lisbon. This is with a company called AV car rentals who have a small office where we live. Otherwise I would have been suspect but we actually had a conversation at that office with an agent who wrote up the reservation.

You need to learn how to drive a stick shift so you can save quite a bit of money.
