Jane- If you buy tickets on British Airways you can rent a car through B.A. Holidays from Hertz for a much lower rate than you'd get renting from Hertz directly. Did this in the past with no trouble. But you must reserve about 10 days or more before you leave the U.S. I procrastinated and paid dearly for it! The B.A. Travel Store at Victoria Station couldn't offer us Hertz. They promised that Europcar was "just as good"--not so!!

We rented from Europcar for 10 days, picking up in Nice, dropping off in Marselles in early November. No problems, and no one-way drop charge in same country. Their rates were the best we found and their web site was very easy to use. Plan to use them again in May in Germany. The differences of opinion on this thread is interesting.

In a word, terrible. Reserved automatic transmission car in April 2010 for May trip to southern France (pick up in Brive)and received multiple written confirmations of the reservation. Local office called us the day we were leaving USA to advise us they would not have an automatic rental car for us and that the prior confirmations were "mistakes." We scrambled to secure a replacement rental, and found one through a broker but for more money and we had to spend a night in Brive just to to take a train to Bordeaux next morning (about 3 hours away) to get the car. When we arrived in Brive, we went straight to the Europcar office in case they might have our reserved vehicle after all, but they told us they did not. I was quite upset at their last-minute renegging on the reservation, but I also made sure to confirm with the desk person that there would be no charge since they had failed to provide the rental as promised; I was told there would of course be no charge. We basically wasted an entire day due to Europcar and lost a night at our rental house in Dordogne. As if all of that was not bad enough, Europcar is incredibly now trying to charge us $650 for the rental they did not deliver, claiming we did not actually cancel the reservation (for a car they did not even have to rent to us)! Truly unbelievable, except that I am still having to waste my time dealing with this company. Very difficult to find a live person to talk to, they are obviously hugely unreliable based on our experience. At a minimum, I would be extremely careful about what they characterize as "confirmed" reservations. I will never deal with Europcar again even if I have to pay significantly more money elsewhere.

And -- you dug for a 9 year old thread to post your complaint?

You already posted this on another thread - so no reason to dredge up older moldy ones to add to the fire . . . .

Just back from Italy on Friday. Rented a car from Europcar, pre-paid and booked online, picked up at Rome train station and dropped at airport in Florence. Easy, friendly and professional.
