Good evening, Jean
Have found a town named GUARCINO, which
is a small town with about 1,800 inhabs.
located about 20 km north of Frosirone.
Guarcino being about 91 klm south east
of Rome in Lazio....This is the closest
to the phonetic name in your e mail.
Perhaps this is it. I searched within
www.virgilio.it/ (IT search machine)
Found a lot on Lazio but very little
on Guarcino. www.yahoo.it/ might be
another to surf. www.queen.it and www.
shinyseek.it/ Most all on the IT
search machines are in Italian.Good surfing, Richard of Hickory Hills, IL...

It is so easy to appreciate someone who goes out of they're way to help you. I again ask if anyone else has some info on Guarcino, i would appreciate it. Thank you for your reply. I've been told a cousin may be the mayor of Guarcino. Any info on this would be helpful, if you know how i can write to him. Also, I've tried the other sights mentioned by Richard and have not been able to get through. But, I'll keep trying.

Hi Jean,
Guarcino is in an area of Italy called La Ciociaria (named for the sandals worn by romans with straps tied around the ankles)It is located about 15 miles north of Alatri and about the same distance east of Fuiggi(famous for their water and spas)
As mentioned earlier, it is a small town and the whole area is steeped in history.Other historical towns in the area are Arpino-Birthplace of Cicero, My parents hometown of Fontana Liri-Birthplace of Marcello Mastroianni, Anagni, Casamari,& Cassino-famous world war 2 battleground.
This is a little traveled area by American tourists but popular with Europeans. If you plan on visiting Guarcino, I'm sure you could easily spend a week enjoying this area.
There is a website that maps out the Ciociaria area. It is:
http://www.eurolink.it/ciociaria/m_cio1.htm

An Altavista search on guarcino produces almost a couple hundred URLs. Unfortunately, there are very few in English:
The overlooking Campo Catino houses one of the best equipped "amateur" astronomical observatory in Europe. See at
http://www.rtmol.stt.it/aocc/index.html

Some info on the Ciociaria may be found at
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaver...5/ciociari.htm

Like we say in Portuguese, "I'll be selling you what follows for the same price I bought it", that is, no profit ... no complaints :-)

Guarcino appeared around the 8th century BC. It was the ancient Vercenum, an important strategic passage in the Aniene valley and was known as a place rich in waters. Besides the observatory, Campo Catino hosts one of the most frequented ski stations in the Lazio. Guarcino is a very well know center of pork products manufacturing, like its typical prosciutto. It's also know because of its amarettos. Its historic center boasts a well preserved medieval architecture.

For what it's worth, the present mayor appears to be a certain Luciano Morini, who may possibly be reached at the phone +39 0775 46007 or by mail, at

Sindaco di Guarcino
Via Milani n. 1
03016 Guarcino - FR

At the same address and phone number you may contact the local tourist office.

Paulo

Gee Paulo,
I had no idea that this was going to be a pissing contest. you can go to Altavista,Goggle and what else regarding Guarcino, but you are entering into an area you know little about. Yes they have recently erected a amateur" astronomical observatory in Campo Catino. But what you neglected to say is that Guarcino which is 10 miles south of Campo Catino is a favorite ski area for those living in La Ciociaria as is Campo Staffi, Forca D'Acero and Prati di Mezzo.
Moreover, let me say that Guarcino is a little Medieval town on the site of a Henici settlement, under Roman rule from the 4C bc and the only remants to this era are some remains of a roman bathouse.
There are two churches in this town. S.Michele at the W. end of the town, and S.Nicola on the Via del Monastero.
As far as the Mayor is concerned, let me say, without disrepect, this town is so small, that if the citizens didn't take turns being mayor, they would have to hire one.
I have truly enjoyed your contributions to this forum and am in awe regaring your knowledge of Rome and Italy in general. So please, keep up the good work.
