Has anyone driven from Prague to Budapest?

Looking at our options to get from Prague to Budapest? Plane, Train or Car?

Has anyone driven this way? Any problems?
It appears the train takes longer than driving!

I would love to hear from folks in answer to CWN's question! We fly into Prague (July 2006) and leave from Budapest 12 days later. We plan 2 days in Prague, a day trip to Terezin, and an overnight in Cesky Krumlov. Then we need to get to Budapest to meet up with family members. We don't know how best to get from Cesky Krumlov to Budapest!!

Train takes 6hr42min

According to, it's 5hr18min on motorways, with tolls along the way.

They also note that you'll need the following

The Czech motorway tax disk (car: 900 CZK per year / 30.14 Euros) is not included.
The Slovak motorway tax disk (car: 150 to 1100 SKK / 3.94 to 28.93 Euros depending on the validity period) is not included.
The Hungarian motorway tax disk (car: 1120 to 35000 HUF / 4.6 to 143.5 Euros depending on the validity period) is not included.

I would take the 7:37am train, arr 14:22.

We are making the trip from Budapest to Prague and looked into renting a car but there is a heavy one way drop off fee, about $300. At that rate I'm checking into getting a driver. It might not be much more and more enjoyable especialy if you make stops because the drivers are usually also guides. I'll let you know how we make out.

To Peggionthego, From Cesky Krumlov to Budapest: it could be easily done by bus and train. From Cesky Krumlov, frequent bus to Ceske Budejovice(about 50 minutes), direct train from Ceske Budejovice(train station is across street from bus terminal) to Vienna (about 4 hours), frequent train (direct train from Westbahnhof, indirect train from Sudbahnhof) from Vienna to Budapest
takes 3 hours.

I'm hoping to drive from Prague to Granville this summer. It seems like renting a car and driving would be the best way but then I've never been to Europe- my travelling experiences are limited to the good old US of A and road trips have always allowed me the option to stop and check someplace out if it seemed like the right thing to do. I've always heard that train was the way to go in Europe but it doesn't seem that cheap, franklly, so I figured that it would work just as well to drive. Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions? Thanks!
