I have been there many times as my mom lives close to Westerbork. It is an impressive monument to the Holocaust. It is not really close to a train station, so best to travel by car. (2 hours from Amsterdam)

Sjoerd, is it possible to rent a bike from a train station (lets say Assen) and bike to it...looking at the map it seems to be only 15 km. Sjoerd, while i have your attention, what other things are there worth seeing in that area? We are spending the weekend in Groningen and would appreciate some ideas. Thank you!

It should be possible to rent bicycles at Assen station. Call one day ahead to check and reserve.
Groningen itself is worth a day: I like the Groninger Museum, and the city itself and great nightlife!
If the weather is nice, take a long daytrip to the island of Schiermonnikoog. Looooooong almost empty, white beaches.
Bourtange is a nice old village, Eastern part of Groningen province right at the German border.
In Drenthe, Orvelte is nice (old village) and the Noorder Dierenpark in Emmen is a great zoo. Close to Emmen are many hunebedden. Have a look at: http://users.bart.nl/~jbmeijer/frntpage.htm
