14 years ago (so it was different in many ways!). Saw a Verdi opera and, to my shame, can't remember which one. It was in Russian, reasonable but not knock-your-socks-off quality (but I'm picky). We bought tickets outside the theatre a few hours before curtain, very cheaply. Tourist bureau had said it was sold out. The very best part was intermission: everybody got up very quickly and headed out to stand in line. For what? we wondered, but we did it too. It turned out to be the refreshments line: champagne, egg, fish & caviar sandwiches, unusual snacks we didn't recognize. And the price? Negligible. All in all, definitely worth it! But perhaps you're thinking ballet?

I saw the Bolshoi ballet company as well in London and also a long time ago. As far as I remember, I liked the performance (can't remember what it was though).
If you should have the opportunity to attend a performance at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, I'd definitely go for it.

Art: During my 6 week long stay in Moscow and St. Petersburg this last October and November, I attended both theatres in these two cities.....the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky (The Kirov). Tickets were purchased some few weeks ahead of time by just buying from the ticket office at the theatre and knowing beforehand what I had wanted to see. I had a seat allocation plan which I obtained off their web sites. Not to be missed if you are a lover of ballet. Both theatres are undergoing restorations. Foreigner prices are in effect but very similar to what you would pay in Toronto and New York. I paid roughly $88 Canadian for a great seat in the first row balcony and other times much cheaper seats. Outstanding performances in magnificent surroundings.

Art - if you appreciate good opera or ballet a visit to the Bolshoi is most definitely worth it. If you feel so-so about opera or ballet it is probably worth it for the experience. If you do not like opera or ballet, then it is not worth it.

You can see schedule and order Bolshoi tickets on line at bolshoi.ru, there is no longer foreign prices, tickets are paid for by credit cart and picked up at ticket office across the street from the theatre. I paid 2000 rbl for tickets to opera, seats in second row.

Garfield: There are no longer different prices for foreigners (as compared to Russian citizens) travelling by train or air within Russia, but there certainly is at both the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky Theatres. Most museums also charge foreigners a higher price for admisstion. The Hermitage in St. Petersburg charges Russian Citizens 15 Roubles whilst foreigners pay 300 Roubles. There are exceptions....... Official delegations; Foreign citizens working for territories of Russia; and Foreign students, learning in educational institutions of Russia.

I know that dual pricing still exist in Russia, however when I was at the Bolshi in Oct, I paid the same for my ticket as the Russian person beside me, I also checked the ticket prices posted in the ticket office. At the circus the prices at the box office were also the same.
