Hi Michelle, We were in Stresa for three days at the beginning of this month. It was a little early for the gardens but was still quite pretty. We went on the boat two days because it was cheap (fifteen dollars or less for a hop on-hop off deal) and we needed something to do. The boat ride itself is worth the price of admission. The gardens at Isola Madre are nice and the palace was interesting. Villa Taranto had magnificent gardens. We had lunch at Palanza one day and walked around that town. We went to the park/zoo one morning. The park was pretty but the zoo consisted of a few goats, birds, chickens and beavers...not much else.
Stresa is a pretty little town with a piazza in the center. We stayed at the Milan au Lac in a very nice room with balcony overlooking Lago Maggiore and the Piazza Marconi where the boats dock . It was a nice hotel for 250,000L including breakfast. We had a nice dinner there the first night, another unmemorable dinner at a place I don't remember and a good dinner at Pappagallo, a popular little restaurant nearby.
I don't know when you plan to go but I can just imagine how beautiful the town and gardens are in full bloom. Email me if you want more information.

To me, Stresa was okay but the real highlight of staying there is making a day trip to the three Borromean (maybe my spelling is incorrect though) islands. You can take the ferry between the islands easily from Stresa. This was one of the best day trips I ever did in Europe. I think you can also take the ferry to parts of Switzerland from Stresa. Here are a few web sites you may like:

If these links don't work, you can e-mail me directly as I know how to do hyperlinks that way.

Just came back from Stresa. Absolutely beautiful because everything was in bloom. The drive up to Switzerland was breathtaking. I also had dinner at Pappagallo and it was good. Stayed at Hotel LaPalma and they couldn't have been nicer. A lakefront room with a fantastic view was around $135 per night. It is a short drive across the mountain to Lake Orta which is pretty also. The only problem for us was that it poured the rain for 48 straight hours. I hope that is not the norm. We went to Tuscany later in the week but we found the best buys on nice leather in a shop in Stresa. Also beautiful ceramics and great cheese.

Michelle, we will be arriving in Stresa this Friday! Can't wait to see the gardens and islands. We are staying right on the Isola dei Pescadore (SP?). Since our trip is in May, we especially chose Maggiore over Como to see the islands and gardens. Will report back in about a month....bliss!
