Has anyone been to lake Como in Italy?

Have you been to Lake Como?
If so would you recommment spending the night
or just visiting for the day?

This is a beautiful area. I believe the lake is approximately 30 miles long with many small towns dotting its coast. We spend three days in the area which was adequate. One day is just wetting the appetite. Check prior threads on this area. I am sure you can get lots of additional information

I recommend 2-5 days.

You might find this short excerpt (of a previous thread) a useful point of departure for learning more about Lake Como.

We live on Lake Como (Lecco) and know some great restaurants in the area, see http://www.straughan.com/italy/restaurants.htm for details.

I went to part of Lake Como for the day, from Milan. We went to Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio. We wanted to go the next day, but were unable due to a train strike. It was the end of March, we weren't sure about the weather or if there would be enough to do. If you have the time, and are looking for some beautiful scenery and relaxation, I would recommend spending at least 1 night. Uf not, I think a day trip is better than nothing.

From Milan..should we take the train or rent a car to go see the lake area?
thanks

Depends on how much "flexibility" you want but you can take a train from Milan to the "mid-lake" area (Varenna/Bellagio/Menaggio). The train from Milan Centrale to Varenna takes 1 hr 20 minutes (sit on the left side facing forward for the best lake views which begin at Lecco). You can also take a train from Milan to the city of Como which is at the bottom of the lake.

Ferries to other lake towns run frequently from both Varenna and Como.
