If so, how did you secure tickets?

I skipped this event when posted to the embassy in favor of travel outside London. In those days the entire American community was invited. I don't know if this has changed given security concerns. I would call the embassy at [44] (0)20 7499-9000. The operators should know where to direct your call. If they do not, ask to speak to the Community Liason Office (CLO). They should be able to help.

The Ambassador's residence is in Regent's Park. Don't know if you'll get inside -- it has some interesting art and furnishings. The grounds are beautiful (except for the British Telecom tower).

Fare is hamburgers and hotdogs, served up by embassy personnel.

I believe there was an open one to all citizens years ago i.e. a picnic organised through the embassy but these days they are only posh invite only parties. Security is too much an issue and I think they are not as open anymore. I used to also walk into the embassy to do tax and pport stuff but now its all controlled access. You are in London anyway just enjoy the trip or hit an american style place for lunch or dinner and celebrate.
