Has anybody heard about timelines associated with the possible United/USAir Merger?

Rumors are trickling around Wall Street and the press, but overall it seems this is being kept in the background. Understandably so, after all if there is a possibility of merger, one of the airlines is at risk of Chapter 11 (United?). It doesn't help sales, tha's for sure. Rumors also have it this merge will be chaos for the passengers as it will set off merger-mania among airlines, after all COMPETITION drives price down. Obviously, for airlines employees is trouble, which increases probability of strikes.

Well, the Department of Justice has quite a hot potato on their hands (who did Bush appointed for the AntiTrust Division?).

I guess I am trying to open a discussion on the impacts of these. Anybody heard anything realted to timelines on this? These are things you may want to keep an eye on.

The Chicago Tribune agrees with you Ed. Sec'y Mineta is opposed and although it's Justice that decides ... his department recommends.

In our news this week, the Dept.of Transportation said NO to a merge and shifted to Dept.OF Justice--hope USAIR stays seperate--we NEED the competition to keep prices down!

CNN just reported the merger is definitely out. Sigh of relief.

Where is the competition if US Air goes bankrupt, as they say they will do if no other partner is found. Then we will have lost their contribution to the United routes... is isn't good either way...
