(ANSA) - Venice, June 18 - Venice's exclusive eatery and drinking hole Harry's Bar has decided to put in its two cents to help combat inflation and has slashed its prices by 10%.

According to a report in the local Il Gazzettino daily, the move was explained to customers in a note attached to the menu.

In the note, owner Arrigo Cipriani said that ''in order to address the inflation fears of the European Central Bank (ECB) and avoid that it raise interest rates, we have decided to cut our prices by 10%''.

Harry's Bar is not new to such initiatives and recently the famous establishment starting giving its American customers discounts because of the sinking value of the dollar.

Harry's Bar opened in 1931 and became famous thanks to the celebrities who frequented it, including Ernest Hemmingway, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Arturo Toscanini, Aristotle Onassis and Woody Allen.

It seems that in April. they launched a 20% discount for US tourists suffering from a weak dollar.

I must remember to pack my baseball hat, shorts, white trainers and bum bag

Aren't the patrons of this place mostly Americans?

eks--we didn't go in, too pricey for us. But from what we saw, it looked like people from all over the world with no one group dominating. Don't know that Harry's keeps track of the nationalities of its customers to determine percentages.

I went inside just to look around but did not order anything. The people I saw looked like American and Asian tourists..not my kind of place, either.

Somewhat related, here is the review of the Harry Cipriani restaurant in New York City:

Since the markup on drinks and eats are probably 500% I don't think it's big news to "slash" it by 10%.

Overpriced and overrated - why would anyone with any common sense even consider spending any money in a joint like that?

Also "somewhat related" are these articles in the NYTimes:

That's great, so instead of paying $24USD for a cocktail it's now only $21.60!

Maybe I'll stop and have a few.

Or maybe not.

Actually I must admit that after passing up Harry's our last 2 visits to Venice, we did have a bellini at Harry's Roma on via Veneto. It was nice to sit street-side and drink while watching the beautiful people shop. We didn't have a meal and were expecting the high price for the drink and actually had fun doing it..just once.
