Happy trenitalia experience (NOT ironic!)
Amazingly--and happily--I managed to buy tickets online this evening, after calling my credit card company once only, and have the printout with the PNR & seat #.
And yes, I could have waited until I got to Venice, but I'm a teacher on a budget, and I now have the €80 2nd class ticket for €29 with a Smart1 fare.
How lucky am I? I should probably go and buy a lottery ticket!
Seriously, I tried this 2 years ago to get an overnight compartment Rome-Paris, so I know how many things can go wrong--and I remember the helpful people who told me what to do when they did

Yes, I'm Canadian, as WillTravel figured out from my screen name. It was a Canadian Mastercard, bless its overused little heart! The only glitch this time was that the information explaining the self-service option was only in Italian. Babelfish is a wonderful invention, no?
And I'm already scoping out concerts in Vienna to use the money.

Always is a big word--and on short trips, the difference wouldn't be worth the effort, even for a cheapo like me! The ticket I booked is Venice-Munich--7 hrs--and what I struggled with in 2007 was an overnight sleeper Rome-Paris. For longer trips, the reduction can be substantial, but of course, people who can afford 5-star hotels are unlikely to see the point of saving E50!
The Smart Fare (Smartfare1 and Smartfare2) are just two of the possible reductions available. Once you select a specific train, you get a list of price options (that's what you give up for the savings, the chance to jump on any old train, but obviously for long journeys there are already limited choices on a specific day).
And my "expertise" is pretty well exhausted with that limited explanation--sorry.
