HANNOVER
 

I am thinking of tagging along on a business trip to Hannover in March,with my husband. We will probably be there for two or three days, and if I join him we will add 5 or 6 days to vacation. Any suggestions on things to see & do in Hannover while he is busy? Any hotel suggestions? He will be going to the trade show at the exhibition center. Where else would you go if you only had a few days? Stay in Germany, or try making it to another country? We have never been to that part of Europe. Train or car?

hi there,<BR>have been to this area in Dec, was great, but little cold. First:You are going during the Hannover fair, so make shure You have a hotel very fast!!!!! <BR>Car is the better choose, so YOu can visit small villages and stop where YOu want. Also there is less chance to catch a taxe during the fair. <BR>Nice place not so far from Hannover: <BR>• Goslar, about 65 km to the south east. Pretty old town with lots of history. Dont miss a tour in the old mine "Rammersberg" (spelling). It is that great, takes You about 2.5 hours. <BR>• Also a UNESCO heritage of mankind is Hildesheim, about 50 km south. Nice to walk arround the citywall, the old dome, the shopping area ...<BR>• The lake Steinhuder Meer, about 30 km west. Nice area to take a long walk, to do great fish dining ... Tip: rent a bike. <BR>• More nice old charming towns in reach: Hameln, Minden, B&uuml;ckeburg ...<BR>have fun<BR>Gar

The official site of Hannover's tourist information center is<BR><BR>http://www.expo.hannover.de/english/tourist.htm<BR><BR>Of course it is nice to have a car, but you can reach most places with public transportation. We were in Hannover in December. There is a nice old section downtown -- you can follow the walk known as "The Red Thread" -- here's a great site that lists what can be seen. http://www.travelforkids.com/Funtodo...y/hannover.htm Don't be put off by the "for kids" title. Be sure to see the Market Church, the old city hall [now nicely renovated into shopping and offices as well as the Sprengel museum. Also do not miss the Aegidienkirche -- left as a memorial after WWII.<BR>Outside of Hannover I would also recommend Goslar as well as the wooden church in the Norwegian stave style in Hahnenklee, also in the Harz Mountains. Good suggestions. I especially agree with Hildesheim, Goslar (very nice, but very crowded with tourists at times) and B&uuml;ckeburg (whose castle is very impressive.) Speaking of castles, just a bit west of Hildesheim is Marienburg Castle, high on a hill next to the town of Nordstemmen - some interesting Prussian history here, and an incredible sight from the valley below. Two other places - Hamelin and Rinteln - are filled with half-timbered buildings and make for a good walk if the weather is nice. I've been to all these places by train, but for Marienburg Castle, a car is most convenient to avoid the 2 km hike from Nordstemmen.
