handel's messiah, new year's, paris
 

We have heard there is a beautiful performance of hande'ls messiah at one of the churches in Paris. Can't locate it on the web...can anyone help us with this?

Heres some information on the (Royal) Church of Val de Grace in Paris, referred to in item 1 above. You'll have to contact the church for details of the date and time of the concert.

That above concert at Val de Grace isn't NY's, it is on Dec. 14th. There are always several performances of Handel's Messiah around Christmas, there is one at the Madeline on 12/19 and one at the Theatre des Champs Elysees on 12/15 (they have their own website, it's a very nice venue). Of course the Madeleine is something to see, also, and I think good acoustics. I would predict the one at the Theatre des Champs Elysees would be the best. I couldn't find any performance of that on NY's day, is that what you mean? Where did you hear this, can't you ask that person?

There are also quite a few concerts in churches on NY's day, that's typical, also. There is one at St Eustache at 4 pm that is trumpet and organ. There is also a Christmas concert of Medieval music at Notre Dame at 8:30 pm on 12/30. There are concerts in other churches, also, like St Emphrem's, but I can't see any Messiah on that particular day.

Did you check St Germain des Pres for the Messiah?

Thanks for all of your suggestions. The person who suggested it, whom I really didn't know, probably thought I said Christmas,not New Year's, eve. I'll definitely use the sites recommended to book a performance.

Well, you should still ask the person WHERE this takes place, there are dozens of churches (if you can). I don't know of any on Christmas, either, just the ones I cited above, though. There isn't one at St Germain des Pres, although they are doing Corelli's Christmas concerto and some Christmas songs on 12/23 there. They had one Messiah at St Sulpice already, last week.

If you are there in mid-December you have several to choose from, otherwise I don't think so, at least not Messiah. There will be plenty of concerts, though. Just check Pariscope when you get there, you can buy it at a news kiosque.
