Hand blown glass - that's not Murano?

We like to pick up artisan-type hand-blown glass from our travels, and we like something that's signed by the artist. I don't actually love what Murano I've seen, and the prices for Murano that I would consider are for much more serious collectors than we are. We're quite happy to purchase student pieces, and we have in the past. Vases are mostly what we buy.

One of my old books recommends a place in Via Del Pellegrino, near Camp de' Fiori as speciallizing in hand-blown glass, but I'd like a choice of places.

Does anyone know of any glass studios in Venice, Florence, Rome or on the Amalfi Coast? I wouldn't want to pay any more than 150-200E. I've gotten some beautiful pieces in that range from Paris and Prague so I know they can be had for that.

Grazie. (4 more sleeps )

I don't know the place on Via del Pellegrino, but there is/was one on Corso del Rinascimento in Rome. I don't think any shop outside Venice or many in Venice would carry student pieces.

But perhaps I've misunderstood. If you're looking for not-made-in-Murano glass pieces, the Rinascimento shop is not the right place for you.

Look at Carlo Moretti in Venice. We bought several gifts at his shop in Venice and some of them fit in your price range. His pieces have a more contempory design.

I just looked at Moretti's site. That's what I have in mind. His vases are beautiful. I'll be sure to visit - thanks.

When I think of Murano, all I've been exposed to is figurines, birds, masks, clowns, that kind of thing. I think I'll need to reevaluate - modern clean lines is what I'm after.

I'll also check out the Rinascimento shop. Thanks.

On Murano, visit the Mazzega glass factory and ask to see the special second floor showroom. It looks like it is closed to the public, but it is not - you have to ask though. That is where they keep the really special designer glass and you will feel like a kid in a candy shop. This is not the Murano tourist stuff, and even those items that are of traditional Murano design are of higher quality than in the lower showroom and the typical Murano shops. The prices in the upper showroom vary from quite affordable up to make your head spin. If you buy something, ask to visit the factory floor and watch the workmen.

We liked this little shop in Venice: Vetri Artistici di Murano, 3 G di Giordani, Castello 4589 (www.venetian-art.com). Not sure if it is the style you want, but we liked their jewelry especially.

Sorry-- that link doesn't work anymore. It is Murano, anyway.

Hi

We are also avid collectors of Murano Glass and escpecially pieces by modern Maestros such as Afro Celotto and Gianluca Vidal. If you are unfamiliar with their work, please see some examples at http://www.murano-crystal-chandelier...y-afro-celotto and please feel free to offer any comments

Thanks

Dean and Sherry

You do find so lovely glass from Empoli - to the west of Florence. I have never been there myself but I have seen it and bought it on many an occasion from a wonderful shop in Via Montenapoleone in Milan.

Perhaps someone knows where you can source it in Empoli.

Do be careful -- some glass in Italy is made in China. I recall a line in a recent Donna Leon book about a merchant taking a delivery of blown glass from China, although I would guess it is the cheap stuff sold to tourists in souvenir shops.

In response to PeaceOut's comment...
Yes. Giordani S.N.C. dal 1972 Vetri Artistici di Murano located at Fond. Vetrai, 75- 30141 Murano (tel: 041.527-4953) is one of the best places to buy authentic murano glass jewellery. I compared all the shops and found this shop to have the best selection of good designs at reasonable prices. Of course you can get higher end jewellery but why spend more? Plus you will find that their glass charms are far nicer than Pandora charms which look all the same and are worn by thousands of people. This shop carries one-of-a-kind charms that come with a certificate of authenticity. Word of advice - don't buy any glass products unless you are given a certificate of authenticity as they could be made in China or elsewhere. I got back home and went to compare my bracelet and charms at all the jewellery stores that carry Pandora, and the salespeople were very impressed and in awe of my bracelet. Save yourself some time and pay a visit to this small but lovely shop.
