Hampton Inn Berlin
Using my Hilton points we will be staying at the Hampton Inn next December for 4 nights located at Uhlandstr. 188-189, 10623. Any information on surrounding stores, restaurants, Ubahn appreciated. This will be our first time in Berlin so ideas on how I might construct my days and evenings to see some of the wonderful sights is also appreciated. My wife wants to attend a few of the Christmas Markets. Thinking that some of these may be more attractive to us than others, suggestions are needed and appreciated.
Thank you for your help |
You will be close to the three U-Bahn stations Uhlandstrasse, Kurfürstendamm and Zoologischer Garten. Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm) is the major shopping street (shops, restaurants, cafés), and also the location of the famous Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, a partially destroyed church which has been kept in its destroyed state as a warning to future generations.
I have seen small festivals just near to that church, although in another season, not a Christmas festival, so there would be a Christmas market there too. Here is a list of the Christmas markets in Berlin (in red, down the right-hand side). Use Google Translate if you don't know much German. http://www.weihnachteninberlin.de/weihnachtsmaerkte/ Lavandula |
Travelwise you also have the S-Bahn station at Savignyplatz in short walking distance.
At and around Savigyplatz (also in the streets leading away from the NOrthern side of the square) you will find many restaurants and pubs/bars - less touristy than on Kurfürstendamm. One quirky place (for decades now) on Kantstr. is the "Schwarzes Cafe" (Black Cafe) - no worries, it looks weirder than it is, and is 24hrs open. The probably nicest christmas market is the one on Gendarmenmarkt. It costs a nominal entrance fee, but has the most beautiful setting. Your nearest will be the one near the Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz - as lavendula wrote. |
Another quirky institution in walking distance from your hotel:
http://www.dicke-wirtin.de Scroll down on each page for the English version. A new, seriously more upscale option for eating would be the new nearby Waldorf-Astoria. But an afternoon coffee + cake break at its Romanisches Cafe could be in the budget. |
Thank you so much for the wonderful advise. Getting excited about go to a city we have not visited despite the fact that the trip is many months away.

A few years ago we stayed near there and found the location to be great for using public transport to cover a lot of ground. I'd sure consider staying there.
