Hamburg-Berlin Rt.-What to see?

I'll be doing a driving tour of Germany, coming down from Denmark, in October. We'll have about 10 days to see Germany, starting in Hamburg. We're thinking of limiting our tour to the north/northwest (Hamburg, Bremen, Lubeck, perhaps Hannover) but would like to add Berlin, if possible. What would you recommend us to see that wouldn't stray too far off the Hamburg to Berlin highway?

Skip Hanover. Not much to see there IMHO.

Just off the A 24 (Hamburg to Berlin Autobahn) there is Schwerin, which has a nicely restored Old Town section and is located prettily along the shores of a lake. There is also a palace that serves as the parliament of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The small city of Ludwigslust might be an alternative. It also sports a palace along with a pretty park surrounding it.

If you like scenery, the region around the Mueritz (I believe Germany's second largest lake) is rural and offers really nice quiet spots. Lots of lakes, big and small and all connected to each other. There are also a few small palace hotels that might be nice for an overnight stop. Just from scratch, I remember Schloss Klink and Schloss Gross Plasten

I would strongly recommend going to the Harz Mountains for three or four of the days at your disposal. This area is some two hours due south of Hamburg.

Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel are worth a visit on your way down. The old town of Goslar is a gem and might be the best place to take a room. Two other towns worth a half day each are Wernigerode and Quedlinburg, both in the former East Germany.

And if you like hiking then the Harz offers a large system of forest trails, where you can still see deer running wild.

Or if a flutter at the tables is your choice then try the casino at Bad Harzburg.

Have a nice trip

Thank you for the suggestions. Do you recommend making hotel/inn reservations beforehand or would we probably find a room somewhere along our route? We'll be traveling in Mid to late October.

In mid-October it should generally be feasible to get along without any advance reservations IMHO. Should you need recommendations of places to stay, you might want to indicate a budget and I shall try to come up with a few suggestions for Hamburg, Berlin and in between - I don't have any experience with the Harz, though (which, while possibly nice, I also would not consider to be on the way from Hamburg to Berlin).
