Hambur Germany

I will be traveling to Denmark soon and I have a layover in Hamburg Germany of 13 hours before my connecting flight. Is the airport open, how safe is it to wait for all those hours at the airport? Any advise is helpful.

Frankly, it is too bad you couldn't get over to the train station and take the train to Copenhagen since it only takes four hours to do so.

But barring that I would at least try to explore the city of Hamburg which has some interesting areas.

What sort of time of day are we talking about, and how much actual free time would you have once you've allowed for checking-in time and any baggage reclaim/reloading?

The airport is only 20 minutes or so from the city centre by the S-Bahn (get a Tageskarte from the machine in the station, rather than pay for single rides). The main art galleries are practically beside the Hauptbahnhof (the Kunsthalle on the northern side, and the Kunst u. Gewerbe for decorative arts on the southern side). One stop further on at Jungfernstieg puts you beside the Alster (where you can take a boat ride), and the main shopping streets. If you wanted to be a bit more adventurous, you could change to the U-Bahn to Landungsbrücken, and get a tour of the harbour from there.

The airport itself has a modern terminal building, but I'd get very bored with trying to amuse myself there for 13 hours, from what I remember of it.

Small tip: if you have time for and are interested in seeing the harbour, you can use your Tageskarte to take the regular public ferry 62 for a half-hour ride past a lot of the impressive sights, and then stay on it to come back again, without having to pay tour prices. You could also stop off at Oevelgönne, stroll on the beach there and visit some of the traditional boats that are kept there (there are also some museum ships at Landungsbrücken), all on the same ticket (the ferries seem to run quite frequently, but you'd need to check the times).

Its all good advise but I will be at this airport from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM, not a good time to tour.

There are hotels within walking distance. If you can afford it why not try to get a decent night's sleep in a secure envi ronment?
