Hallstatt in March - HELP
My husband and I will be going to Austria in Mid-March. We really wanted to go to Hallstatt, but reading previous posts it seems that the salt mines and the museums will be closed at that time of year. I need advice, would it be worth it to go for the scenery or does anyone have any suggestions for some other towns we could visit that would be just as scenic but might have more places to visit? We are already going to Vienna and Salzburg. Any help would be appreciated.

I think Halstatt would still be beautiful in March. We spent one night there last summer and felt like we saw the entire sleepy town. Consider driving to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. It's a picturesque little town maybe 3 hours from Salzburg? (I'm guessing) It's bigger than Halstatt and is a great place to get a feel for Czech culture. Depending on how much time you have, see both!

Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into Cesky Krumlov.

I've only been to Hallstatt in May (twice) but have seen pictures of the town in winter and it looks like a fairyland!
The Museum IS open in March from 10 AM to 6 PM. Also, the Archaeological Site under the sporting goods store, Janu, is open. It has a very interesting display of Celtic and Roman artifacts discovered during a remodeling excavation. Definitely worth a look! |
Thanks for your help.
