From Lucerne you can take an excursion to Pilatus. I took the excursion where you ride a boat across the lake, a cogwheel train to the top then cable car and gondola to get back down. The views were great.

You can also go to Rigi or Titlus. There are similar excursions. I haven't been to Titlus but Rigi is beautiful, you see all 3 of the big lakes and the towns on them.

You almost have to wait to see what the atmospheric conditions are the day you want to go, if it is cloudy it probably isn't worth going up.

Any or all of the above suggestions are winners.

Hi sungyoubkim,

To answer your "how to" question, go to the websites: www.pilatus.ch, www.rigi.ch, & www.titlis.ch. Each should have instructions & directions to get there from Luzern.

Have fun!

I'll second the Pilatus excursion. It's exactly half a day, very scenic, very easy, very enjoyable, and the beautiful boat ride is a great bonus.

We did it the opposite way that cls2paris describes it (i.e. gondola ride up, cogwheel down, boat back to town), but I don't think it matters much either way.

Enjoy!

Well - first of all - you can see Swiss Alps from Lucerne - all you have to do is look up.

For a short trip I reco ascending Pilatus - whichis the closest - just the other side of the lake. Since there are two choices - cable car or cog railway - you have the option of going up one way and down the other.

Just be aware that if the weather is bad the top of the mountain may be shrouded in clouds - and you will see nothing from up there. (When we went up it was a clear day - but by the time we sat down to lunch the clouds were rolling in - we had to race indoors with our food - and we saw little on the way down.)
