Thanks for that link Travelnut -- memories of my home town in Europe. In fact I lived in front of the first bridge which is labeled "Lift Bridge." I don't know why they didn't call it by its true name, the Gravenstenenbrug. This bridge is very similar to the Magerebrug in Amsterdam which you see in many tourist brochures and guidebooks.

The two-tiered step gabled building on the right was called the Elephant building and a new 20th century art deco version was built next to it, barely discernible in the photo.
